This design represents the profound journey of transformation that a transgender individual goes through, reflected through the symbolic lens of alchemy. The figure at the center emerges from a cocoon, embodying the personal metamorphosis—moving from one form of identity into the next. This is the journey of becoming one’s true self, breaking free from past constraints and embracing authenticity.
Alchemical transformation is divided into four key stages, each represented in this design:
Nigredo (Blackening): The shattered mirror on the right symbolizes Nigredo, the breaking down of old identities, societal expectations, and illusions. It represents the pain and confusion that often accompany the first steps of self-realization, the darkness before rebirth.
Albedo (Whitening): The cocoon symbolizes Albedo, the process of purification, where the individual starts to shed their former self, moving closer to clarity and truth. It’s a time of introspection and beginning anew.
Citrinitas (Yellowing): The androgynous figure breaking free from the cocoon stands for Citrinitas, the emergence of one’s true identity, the discovery of inner gold. This stage symbolizes the courage and empowerment that come with embracing one’s true self.
Rubedo (Reddening): The moth at the top of the design, fully formed and in flight, symbolizes Rubedo—the final stage of transformation, representing full integration and authenticity. This is the moment of rebirth, where the individual lives in harmony with their true self.
The lily on the left embodies purity and renewal, representing the new life that awaits once the process of transformation is embraced. The Latin inscriptions "Solve et Coagula" (Dissolve and Coagulate) remind us that this journey requires breaking down old structures to rebuild a truer version of oneself. At the bottom, the phrase "Nosce Te Ipsum" (Know Thyself) reflects the deepest truth of this experience: the journey toward self-realization and acceptance.
This design is a celebration of transgender identity and the courageous journey of transformation, beautifully tied to the ancient wisdom of alchemy. It reminds us that true change is both an inner and outer journey, a process of becoming who we are meant to be.
