One of the projects I started Spoontown was a kuksa, made from some absolutely beautiful wood that was available there.

Inspired by the wonderful lines of Avinoam Lebber , with a little bit of chip-carving influence from ＬＥＥＪＯＨＮＰＨＩＬＬＩＰＳ , Jan Leuschner , Jenny Soddu Per Norén and Carolina Smoorenburg , I ended up with this fun and beautiful kuksa.

Since I’m currently exploring how to combine vessel and spoon carving, I wanted to make a matching little spoon to go with it.

I tried to carry the style through into the spoon as well, with a little influence from Jane Mickelborough and her absolutely beautiful spoons.

I’m very happy with how the whole set turned out!

At Spoontown , Jan Leuschner shared his knowledge and showed me how to make a Samuel Alexander vessel — but this one needed a lid. The lid and the vessel were split, so they fit together and flow into each other in a very natural way.

I’m really grateful to Jan for being so generous and for showing me his way of working so openly. Together we made a few vessels, and this is the first one I’ve managed to finish at home.

While working on it, I could see it straight away: a very natural look on the outside, and a beautiful golden finish on the inside. A little surprise when you open it.

I’m really happy with how it turned out!

At Spoontown , Rachel Bainton gave a demo on how to get as many blanks as possible out of a single piece of log. At the end, we were all allowed to take one of the blanks home.

Since I really love Rachel’s pocket spoon, I wanted to have a go at making one myself. I decided to combine the style of spoons Rachel makes with some of the magic that Jane Mickelborough manages to put into her spoons.

My magic is, of course, nowhere near Jane’s level yet, but it was so much fun to give this a try.

Who knows, maybe this will eventually turn into a new variation… 👀

I finally finished these two mugs.

It took me quite a while to decide whether I wanted to finish them at all. While hollowing them out, they developed some serious cracks, and at one point I was convinced they were completely lost.

By drying them extremely slowly and then sealing the cracks with Japanese lacquer, I managed to close them up completely. That convinced me to give them a second chance, even though the traces of the cracks are still visible.

I’m now going to put them through some pretty extreme tests to make sure they’re completely watertight — and, more importantly, that they stay that way.

Whatever the outcome, I’m really happy with how they turned out. They’ve become two beautiful mugs. 😊

I’d heard so many great stories about Spoontown —how much fun it was and what a wonderful atmosphere it had—and I really wanted to experience it for myself.

This year, it finally fit perfectly into the family schedule, so I decided to go. And believe me, everything I’d heard was true. What an incredible atmosphere, what a fantastic bunch of people, and what an amazing amount of knowledge and experience gathered in one place. I truly had the time of my life.

I met so many wonderful people who all contributed to making this weekend so special that mentioning everyone would make this post far too long. So I’ll keep it general, with one exception…

Jan Leuschner , I sincerely want to thank you for an unforgettable weekend, and especially for so generously sharing your knowledge and wisdom. I hope you enjoy your Wout van Aert Scoop as much as I enjoyed making it for you. And I already know that I’ll get an enormous amount of enjoyment from the absolutely beautiful folding spoon you made for me.

Thank you, Spoontown. I can’t wait to come back!

When Jan Leuschner asked me if I could carve a Wout van Aert spoon for him, I thought, “Why not?”

Then he added, “But he has to be on a bicycle.”
That was my first “uh-oh” 😆

Soon everyone started saying that he obviously needed a helmet as well. And of course, the helmet had to be removable. At that point I thought, “Uh-oh… even more!” 😅

Then came the next suggestion: “Could he have interchangeable heads?”
That was definitely the moment for a proper “Oh dear…” 🫣

But I decided to give it a try anyway, and the result became this scoop, inspired by the track at the end of Paris–Roubaix, with Wout riding triumphantly across them. 👌🚴‍♂️🏆

Jan, I hope you enjoy this spoon. It was carved for you with a great deal of love and fun.

From a small piece of walnut that almost ended up on the scrap pile, I managed to carve this little cup.

The inspiration clearly came from Samuel Alexander , but I tried to add my own touch by giving the handle a character of its own.

Inspired by the beautiful spoons made by Christoph Westerburg and Lieuwe Jongsma , I wanted to try making a spoon with little feet as well. 😊 It turned into a regular eating spoon that can stand on its own little feet.

Just one more coat of oil, and it will be ready to join the collection. 😊

After inspiring workshop at , I just had to give it a try myself.

Luckily, I still had a cup that could use a bit of decoration, as well as a small mug that was asking for something extra. I’m really happy with how they turned out.

The inside of the cup will be finished with Ki urushi. The small mug is finished with red urushi combined with Ki urushi.

When I started carving my frog cup, I actually began with two blanks at the same time… because you never know. 😄

I finished this one as well. The wood was in even worse condition, so it needed quite a bit of urushi to bring it back to life. In the end, I’m really happy with how it turned out. 😊
