Welcome to Mushing Monthly!
In this new series, weโre taking you behind the scenes at Snowy Owl to share the inside scoop on dog sledding and the work that goes into caring for a pack of nearly 200 huskies.
For our first edition, weโre talking about responsible breeding and how we plan for the long-term health and future of our pack.
Weโve tracked our dogsโ lineage since Snowy Owl began in 1983, with some family trees extending more than 10 generations. These records help us select each pairing carefully based on health, personality, physical traits, lineage and what our pack needs at that time.
Last year, we focused on adding more large dogs to the pack and bred several of our Malamutes. This year, our priority is greater breed diversity, including breeding Oreo, our new Canadian Eskimo Husky.
We breed males between approximately 18 months and 10 years old, while females are bred only between the ages of two and five. The health and well-being of every dog guide the entire process.
Stay tuned for the next Mushing Monthly, where weโll share how we care for our expecting mothers throughout their pregnancies.
