Hi, I’m Krista. 🤍🌸

If you’re new here, I thought it was time to properly introduce myself.

I’m the person behind Sweetbriar Goods, a little shop in Black Diamond, Alberta, built around something I believe deeply in. That where we choose to spend our money matters.

I’ve always believed that small businesses have the power to strengthen communities. That’s why I choose to partner with Canadian makers, artists, and independently owned businesses whenever I can. Some of the products you’ll find at Sweetbriar are proudly made in Canada, while others are thoughtfully sourced from around the world by Canadian companies I love to support. Every product on our shelves has a story, and every purchase helps support Canadian small businesses.

I love creating a space that feels welcoming, inspiring, and full of beautiful things made with care. Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift, something special for your home, or a little treat for yourself, I hope Sweetbriar feels like a place where you can slow down, explore, and discover something meaningful.

When I’m not at the shop, you’ll likely find me at the historic Twin Cities Hotel in Longview, another business that keeps me busy and connected to this incredible community.

I’m also endlessly grateful for Dani and Jaxon, who bring so much heart, kindness, and care to Sweetbriar every day. This little shop wouldn’t be the same without them.

Whether you stop in to browse, refill a bottle, find the perfect gift, or simply say hello, thank you for supporting our little shop. Your support means so much, not only to us, but to the many Canadian businesses, artists, and makers whose work fills our shelves.

Happy Stampede! 🤠🌾

If you’re looking for a break from the crowds, take the scenic route this Stampede season.

Nestled along Alberta’s beautiful Cowboy Trail, Diamond Valley is the perfect day trip, grab lunch, wander the shops, enjoy the drive, and discover a few treasures to take home.

We’ve stocked the shop with a few western inspired favourites for the season, from classic bandanas and locally made goods to pieces that feel right at home on the prairie.

Whether you’re headed to the rodeo or simply chasing a slower pace, we’d love to see you.

Today we’re celebrating this beautiful country we call home, and the incredible people who make it.

Every shelf at Sweetbriar is filled with products created by Canadian makers, artists, and small businesses. Behind every candle, print, bag, soap, and gift is someone pursuing a dream, creating with care, and helping keep our local communities thriving.

When you choose to shop local, you’re doing so much more than making a purchase. You’re supporting families, encouraging creativity, strengthening small-town economies, and helping Canadian businesses continue to grow.

5 reasons your dollar is best spent locally.

5) About $0.68 of every dollar spent locally gets reinvested in your community. This isn't just about keeping money in the same spot. It's about making that money the most effective. When you spend your money inside of your community, it creates an economic synergy. You decide what businesses survive with your hard earned dollars. Sweetbriar Goods is one of my favorites to support!

4) You create a better place to live. Towns thriving with local, small businesses are just more interesting, culturally vibrant places to live. No one wants to live in a city dominated by national chains and big box stores. Ironically, if you want more variety and specialty options, think smaller. Not bigger.

3) Local businesses have to serve their communities well. They literally can't afford to offer a bad product or a substandard service. They don't have big, fancy marketing budgets to make up for it. So, every dollar and every customer counts. Most small businesses literally have their name on their buildings, so it's their reputation that's at stake, not just the bottom line.

2) Your dollar spent locally buys you access to real people, not a customer service line. Small business owners are passionate about what they do, so they are your best source of expert information on the subject. You don't have to worry about your call or your concern being outsourced to an overseas center. Chances are you'll be speaking to a knowledgable business owner or employee when you shop locally.

1) Your dollar directly influences a life, not a logo. There is a person and a family behind every small business. What's more, 2 out of every 3 new jobs have been created by small businesses since 2014. So your dollar creates local jobs for other people in your community. Spending your dollar locally is the best investment you can make in your neighbor's life.

There are weeks that hold both celebration and ache.

This week, I marked another trip around the sun. My first birthday without my Dad. Grief has a way of softening joy. It’s been tender. Heavy in moments.

And yet, the arts, and my people, showed up for me.

I sat in the dining room of his hotel and watched his beloved dinner theatre unfold. Laughter rising, glasses clinking, stories told under warm lights. Friends beside me. Steady. Kind.

Holding space without trying to fix it.
Last night, I stood in an old church as Reuben and the Dark and The Bullhorn Singers filled the room with song, powerful and beautiful. I felt carried. Not alone.

The arts gather us. So do good friends. They help us feel what we can’t always name. They remind us that even in sorrow, there is still beauty. Still connection. Still light.

This week, I’m especially grateful for art in all its forms, and for the ones who sit beside me in it. For the way they carry us. For the way they keep love present.
