For a stronger minus prescription, choosing the lens material first can be backwards.

Minus lenses are generally thinnest near the centre and thicker toward the edges. Frame size and centration therefore affect how much of that thicker outer lens remains once the lens is cut into the final shape.

A smaller frame that places the eyes well within the lens shape can sometimes produce a noticeably cleaner finished edge before we have changed lens material at all. High-index materials and modern lens designs can then be considered as part of the complete job.

This is one reason we like seeing the prescription while frames are being chosen. The frame is not simply the part that holds the lenses afterward. Its size, shape and position are already influencing the finished pair.

If you have a stronger prescription, bring it with you while you browse.

Two frames can have almost the same shape and dimensions on paper, yet one stays comfortably in place while the other needs constant pushing up.

Bridge width alone does not explain the difference. Bridge shape determines where the frame actually contacts your nose. Temple length and frame width affect where pressure lands around the ears and sides of the head.

There is another variable that is easy to overlook: your prescription. The finished lenses add their own thickness and weight, so we consider how the frame will work after the lenses go in, not simply how it feels empty.

Adjustments matter, but they cannot turn the wrong underlying geometry into the right frame.

That is why fitting starts while you are choosing your glasses, not after you have chosen them.

If your eyes consistently become tired or dry at roughly the same point in the workday, the timing can tell us something.

Concentrated computer work can change how completely we blink, making it harder for the tear film to remain stable. Your working distance matters as well. A laptop close to you and two large monitors farther back are different visual tasks, even though we casually call both “screen time.”

Prescription and lens design can add another layer.

Rather than treating “computer eyes” as one problem with one solution, pay attention to the pattern. When does discomfort start? Which screen are you using? How far away is it? Does changing tasks help?

Those details are useful during an eye exam because they describe what your eyes are actually being asked to do for hours at a time.

Myopia-control spectacle lenses may look much like ordinary glasses. What happens across the lens can be quite different.

Some designs use peripheral lenslets to create controlled defocus. Another approach uses microscopic light-scattering elements intended to alter retinal contrast. Contact-lens options bring different optical designs into the discussion again.

This is one reason we are cautious about reducing myopia management to a particular product name. The evidence is developing, and the appropriate approach depends on factors such as a child’s age, prescription, progression and ability to wear the option consistently.

For parents comparing what they have read online, bring the questions with you. A useful myopia conversation should explain the differences clearly enough that you understand why an option is being considered.

Most people think of contact lenses as either dailies or monthlies. Since February, there is a third option in Canada — a weekly replacement lens.

Alcon's PRECISION7 is designed to be worn for a week and then replaced with a fresh pair. It sits between the convenience of a daily (no cleaning) and the cost structure of a monthly (fewer lenses used per year). For some people, that middle ground is exactly what they have been looking for.

A weekly lens is not the right fit for everyone. It still needs nightly cleaning and a case, which means more maintenance than a daily. But for someone who finds dailies expensive and monthlies uncomfortable toward the end of the month, it is worth a conversation. 👓

A contact lens prescription is specific to the lens type, so trying a new option starts with a fitting. If you are curious, come in and we will talk through whether it suits the way you actually wear contacts.

A parked car on an August afternoon in Calgary can reach 60°C inside. Your glasses were not built for that.

Heat warps acetate frames slowly — the fit drifts, the temples loosen, and the lenses stop sitting where they should. Some lens coatings, especially anti-reflective treatments, can craze or peel when exposed to sustained high temperatures. A frame that fit perfectly in April can feel like a different pair by Labour Day.

Three small habits that keep a good pair lasting longer. Store them in the case when you are not wearing them — not on the dashboard, not on top of your head. Rinse off sunscreen and sweat with water before wiping, because both leave residue that grinds into coatings. And if the fit has shifted over the summer, bring them in for an adjustment. It takes five minutes and it is always free for frames purchased from us.

Drop by anytime. No appointment needed for adjustments.

Calgary weather today is a mix of sun and clouds with a high of 24°C to 25°C and a 30% to 40% chance of late-afternoon showers or thunderstorms.

Light-adaptive lenses adjust to that. They stay clear indoors and darken automatically when UV exposure increases outside. When you step back in, they fade to clear again. One pair that handles the shift so you do not have to swap between glasses and sunglasses every time you walk through a door.

A few things worth knowing. They respond to UV, not visible light, so they will not darken behind a car windshield that already blocks UV. They work best for people who move between indoors and outdoors throughout the day. And in cold weather they tend to get darker and stay dark a little longer — which, in Calgary, is not necessarily a problem.

For driving or long stretches in bright sun, dedicated prescription sunglasses still have the edge. But for everyday versatility — the office, errands, a walk along the Bow — photochromic lenses are hard to beat.

Come in and we will show you how they work in person. It takes about ten seconds to see the difference. 🕶

Back-to-school season gets busy quickly.

Before schedules fill with classes, activities, and routines, August is a good time to check whether your child’s vision is ready for the year ahead.

For children with progressing nearsightedness, this can also be the right moment to ask about myopia management.

At PlusMa, we are building this conversation around guidance, monitoring, and parent education — not a quick lens sale. The goal is to help families understand the options, track changes over time, and make decisions with confidence.

Our August back-to-school event is designed for exactly that kind of conversation.

It is easy to blame screens for every change in a child’s vision.

But the myopia conversation is more nuanced than that.

Long stretches of close-up work, limited outdoor time, dim indoor lighting, and family history can all be part of the bigger picture. Screens may be involved, but they are rarely the whole story.

For parents, the practical takeaway is not panic. It is awareness.

Encourage outdoor time when possible.
Make reading and homework spaces well lit.
Build in distance breaks during close-up tasks.
And if your child’s prescription keeps changing, ask whether myopia management should be part of the plan.

Back to school is a good time to look at the pattern — not just the prescription.
