Smithbilt Hats Building and selling custom felt hats in Calgary since 1919. Owned and operated locally.

Although many city officials in Calgary’s early days gave cowboy hats as gifts to dignitaries visiting the city, a series of events let to the establishment of the white cowboy hat as the city’s symbol of hospitality. 1948 became the first “White Hat” Stampede, for those who could afford them.

10 years ago, I started my volunteer journey.

That same year, I was introduced to — and the dream of owning one of my own was planted.

Between university, marriage, raising three boys, and life moving fast… it just never quite happened.

Until now…

So let me officially introduce my very first Smithbilt —I call her ‘Indigo Jane’.

A small dream, a full-circle moment, and proof that some things are worth the wait!

To the women who taught us that style is something lived in — not just worn.

The ones who could make a simple outfit unforgettable, who somehow always knew how to carry themselves with both strength and softness, and who passed down a love for tradition, craftsmanship, and showing up well.

Today we’re celebrating the mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, and mother figures who shaped more than just our wardrobes.

There’s something about this time of year in Alberta — the first real stretch of warm evenings, rodeo season is almost here, calendars quietly filling with weddings, patio nights, fundraisers, and all the events that seem to arrive with spring and summer.

And while Smithbilt has always been known for hats, there’s an entire side of the store people still haven’t fully discovered.

We’ve been carefully building a large collection of clothing that feels like an extension of the lifestyle so many of us already live here — pieces that work for rodeo weekends, summer events, lunches downtown, and evenings that start casual and end somewhere unexpected.

Elevated western, thoughtful fabrics, good tailoring, beautiful textures, and the kind of pieces you reach for over and over.

Smithbilt Hats is currently hiring junior hatters and apprentice hatters to join the hat shop and learn the craft behind one of Canada’s most iconic hatmakers. If you’re hands-on, curious, and drawn to heritage work, we’d love to hear from you.

We’ve also officially opened our books for corporate events, from team gatherings to client experiences. Think craftsmanship, storytelling, and a space that feels anything but ordinary.
