Building and selling custom felt hats in Calgary since 1919. Owned and operated locally.

Although many city officials in Calgary’s early days gave cowboy hats as gifts to dignitaries visiting the city, a series of events let to the establishment of the white cowboy hat as the city’s symbol of hospitality. 1948 became the first “White Hat” Stampede, for those who could afford them.

Python, fish skin, capybara and caiman have arrived, bringing a little wild side to the shop for those not looking to go unnoticed.

For local organizations, charities and community groups, our Community Builder Program is designed to turn an evening together into an opportunity to give back. Smithbilt provides the venue, light appetizers and a no-host bar, while 10% of regular-priced merchandise sales from the evening are returned to your organization as a sponsorship contribution.

We took The Amazing Race Canada for a spin. 🤠🏁

Smithbilt Hats was proud to be part of the Season 12 finale of The Amazing Race Canada, as the final three teams raced their way through Calgary.

Their stop at Smithbilt put an iconic piece of Calgary history at the centre of the challenge: the White Hat.

Contestants had to search for hats, determine where in the city each one belonged, race across Calgary to make their deliveries, collect their receipts, and make their way back to Smithbilt to find out if they got it right.

From making Calgary’s original White Hat to watching it become part of an Amazing Race challenge 80 years later, this was a pretty special one for us.

Thanks to The Amazing Race Canada for stopping by the hat shop.
