Today I went to the cross iron mall for a walky and a shoppy with my mom. As we walked towards the back of the Suzy Shier store, I heard the familiar sound of ripping fabric. I spun around to see where that was coming from and there she was at the back of the check out counter, ripping up that pile of clothes. The ones already shredded were in the bag on the floor.
I asked what she was doing and she said that she was destroying damaged goods.
I asked why wouldn’t you donate them if they are still ok ? Like a button or a zipper or pass them along for free.
And she said she had to destroy them and it’s what they do.
I asked her what was wrong with the clothes and she kept saying they were damaged. Even after prying she still wouldn’t disclose what kind of damage.
My mom and I kept looking around that area as she was destroying brand new clothing and I couldn’t keep it in.
I said. Excuse me, can you take that into the back and do that? I find it extremely offensive and wasteful and quite awful that you are destroying this stuff in the middle of the store. She said she would take that into consideration and also didn’t seem concerned at all that I expressed it quite awful that directly in the mall hallway they have bins that we should choose what kind of waste, recycling or compost we have to dispose of.
I haven’t worked retail in a mall in quite some time so I am unaware of this practice. But I do see a lot of damaged brand new stuff at the thrift stores.
I find it so crazy that we have a carbon emission goal, must recycle and reduce and reuse while massive corporations trash stuff.
In my sewing room, I will take the time to carefully place the patterns to create the least amount of water cut offs, I can make ten sweated with less than half a grocery store bag full of scraps which I then turn into dog beds for shelters.
This was crazy and new to me and I’d love if anyone can shed some light on it.
In a world where we build LEED certified buildings and each contractor has to report thier waste and recycling plan, it seems insane to me to do this. I am going to email Suzy Shier head office and ask about it.
But Wowsers- never seen that before.
