Once the seal opens up, shower water slips behind the tub surround. It soaks drywall and framing out of sight, and the first signs are often soft tile, a musty smell or a stain on the ceiling below. By then the repair is much bigger than a bead of caulk.

Drip. Drip. Drip. It's a one-song band, and it plays at 2 AM in a Calgary bedroom with the door closed. Somehow it's still the loudest thing in the house.

Toilet gurgling AND two other drains running slow? That's not three problems. It's one.

When the main drain line starts to clog, every fixture on it struggles at the same time. Air gets pushed back through the traps, so you hear gurgling. Water drains slowly in the shower, the sink and the laundry. The lowest drain in the house, usually in a Calgary basement, is where it shows up first.

That swing usually comes from a worn cartridge inside the shower valve. Calgary's hard water wears the seals and leaves mineral buildup, so the valve stops blending hot and cold the way it should.

It's "after the snow is done."

We checked. In YYC, the snow is never done. It takes a short break in July, then comes back to see how you're doing.

That's because the smell isn't on the surface. Pet hair is the easy part. Dander, saliva, skin oils and moisture work down into the fabric and the foam under it, and a vacuum never reaches that far.
