🧬 This one feels a little more personal.
I’ve shared lots of science-themed scrunchies here before. I’ve always loved finding fun, unique science and medical patterns and turning them into something you can actually wear. But this is a new DNA pattern… and the timing of it feels a little surreal.
I’ve never really shared much personal stuff here, but I’ve been wanting to bring a little more of me into this page. So I thought I’d share why this particular pattern means a little more to me this week.
My mom has a form of dementia that has a genetic component. When I learned this, I also learned there was a 50% chance that I could have inherited the affected gene — and if I carried it, there was a possibility I could pass it along to my own daughters.
That’s a pretty heavy what if to carry.
On Thursday, I finally received the results of my genetic testing.
Negative. ❤️
I honestly don’t think I can put into words the weight that was lifted when I was given those results.
Relief for myself.
Relief for my husband.
Relief for my girls.
And gratitude that this is something I don’t have to wonder about anymore.
So now, when I look at this little DNA pattern, it feels a bit different.
It’s still a science-themed scrunchie — something I would have loved making regardless — but this week, it also feels like a little reminder of just how much our DNA can hold.
And maybe that’s the beauty of handmade things. Sometimes they become part of our stories without us ever intending them to. 🧬❤️
