1950s silk taffeta dress made in Paris, black with gold medallion print. Voluminous skirt with sweetheart neckline and nipped in waist. A true one of a kind. Could be worn with black pumps, ankle strap pumps or even the red suede flats you see peeking out of the bottom right hand corner of the first photo. Thanks Marissa for styling this dress, including your own chunky gold necklace, very mid to late 1950s style. Check out Marion’s Fridays or Saturdays 12-4:30.

This charming lady who hales from Japan, was a recent visitor at our shop. Among other items, she purchased this 1960’s ‘Fortrell’ (those of that generation will remember this fabric well!) royal blue jacket with the original white rimmed buttons and top-stitching. She paired it perfectly with her own eclectic style.

For those interested in fashion trivia, by the way,
I did a little research on Japanese style. Back in the 1980’s Japanese fashion areas in Tokyo and Osaka have become world famous for their vintage-loving shopping. Thrift shops flourish and have become an iconic part of Japanese culture in these 2 cities.

‘Harajuku’ for instance, (a famous neighborhood in Tokyo) became a place for teens to indulge in different subsects of their culture. Here, mix and matching what you want with bold and rule-breaking street fashion with abandon.

Other areas to investigate are ‘Shimokitazawa - bohemian hub of vintage and Y2K.

Koenji - (distinct music and fashion tribes) Underground and Anguru Kei (dark avant-garde sub style of Japanese ‘Visual Kei’ (which focuses on Western-style glam as pop elements.)

‘Osaka America-Mura’ - catering to urban apparel and hip hop, Streetwear and Gyaru (since the 1990’s) bold dramatic makeup, hair, rebellion against tradition Asian beauty standards.

All in all, lots for those interested in the elements of Japanese modern style to consider. By prioritizing individuality over conformity, Japan continues to inspire the global fashion landscape.
