Today’s Cacao tip is simple—but important!

Did you know that high temperatures can reduce some of the beneficial compounds and nutrients in Cacao? 🔥

If you’re enjoying Ceremonial Cacao for its nutritional and plant benefits, avoid boiling it. Instead, gently warm your liquid and melt the Cacao at a moderate temperature (70 - 80 Celsius/158 - 176 F).

And while you can bake with Cacao, keep in mind that high-heat baking can reduce some of its naturally occurring beneficial compounds. For baking, regular cocoa powder may be a better and cheaper choice when the nutritional benefits of minimally processed Cacao aren't your priority.

🤎 Our tip: Treat your Cacao gently—think warm, not boiling—so you can preserve more of what makes this beautiful plant so special.

Cacao does not begin in a cup. 🤎

It begins with a tree, a fruit, the land, farmers, communities, and generations of ancestral knowledge.

The ceremonial cacao I work with comes from Arhuaco Indigenous cacao farmers in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. 🇨🇴 As someone born and raised in Colombia, this connection is deeply meaningful to me.

For me, conscious consumption means looking beyond the product and asking:

🌿 Where did it come from?
🤲 Who grew and prepared it?
🌎 What land and communities nurtured it?
✨ What traditions and knowledge are connected to it?

Honouring cacao means honouring the plant, the people who cultivate it, and the ancestral wisdom carried through this sacred food.

May every cup be enjoyed with gratitude, awareness, and respect. ☕️🤎

🤎 Is the cacao in your cupboard a good-quality choice?

Here are a few simple things to look for:

🔎 Check the label: Review the ingredients and the origin of the cacao beans. Look for pure cacao (unless you want some extra ingredients in your cacao such as mushrooms).

✨ Look at the cacao: Do you notice a natural oily sheen or visible cacao butter? Quality whole-bean cacao retains its natural fat, an important part of its flavour, texture, and nutritional profile.

The less processed and more transparent the sourcing, the better informed your choice can be.

Did you know that Cacao’s story goes back more than 5,000 years?

The strongest archaeological, palaeobotanical, and genetic evidence points to the upper Amazon region of South America, particularly areas of what are now Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia, as the ancient homeland of Cacao. 🌱

Long before Cacao became the chocolate we know today, Indigenous peoples of the region were cultivating, using, and carrying knowledge about this remarkable plant across generations…

🧡 Tomorrow, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Every year, I make sure me and my family wear an orange shirt; this is as a small but meaningful way to honour this day and keep the conversation alive.

The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of culture, freedom, identity, and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children in the residential school system. Wearing orange helps raise awareness, support education, acknowledge this painful history and its ongoing intergenerational impacts, and remind us that reconciliation requires continued commitment.

We honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and Indigenous communities.

Reconciliation is more than words. It calls on all of us to listen, learn, reflect, and take meaningful action.

Today and every day, we honour and stand in support of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, and Indigenous peoples and cultures around the world.
