Feature Friday - Aquatic Sports

This week we will highlight just a few of the underappreciated aquatic sports - swimming, diving, and water polo.

Competitive swimming started in Britain in the 1800's. Swimming was first considered an official sport in the United States in 1888. The first Olympic swimming competitions occurred in 1896. The four main types of competitive swimming strokes are the backstroke, freestyle, butterfly, and breaststroke. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swimming_(sport)

In its more elaborate, acrobatic form, diving originated in Europe early in the 19th century as a diversion of gymnasts and as a competitive sport in the late 19th century. It became a part of the swimming program of the Olympic Games in 1904 and developed rapidly through the first half of the 20th century. - https://www.britannica.com/sports/diving

There is little documentation as to the origins of water polo. It is known, however, that the sport originated in the rivers and lakes of mid-19th century England as an aquatic version of rugby football. Early games used an inflated, vulcanized rubber ball imported from India known as a "pulu" (the single Indian word for all "balls"). Pronounced "polo" by the English, both the ball and the game became known as "water polo." - https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/sports/olympics/longterm/waterlo/history.htm

Fan Friday - Karate
This week we will highlight the underappreciated sport of Karate.

Karate is one of the oldest fighting styles in the world with a history that can be traced back 1400 years to Daruma, the founder of Zen Buddhism in Western India.

Karate, or “empty hand”, was a form of martial arts that served as self-defense. There was a period in Japanese history when it was not allowed to wear weapons for protection therefore people had to learn Okinawan martial arts to defend themselves against enemies.

Karate was known as “Te” in its earliest stages on Ryukyu Island in Japan. The first teachers were Okinawan masters Sokon Matsumura and Sakugawa Kanga. This style later evolved and developed into modern Karate.

Karate’s popularity skyrocketed in mainland Japan after World War II. The Japanese Karate Association was just the beginning, as many Okinawan masters emigrated to different countries around the world and began teaching the fast-growing martial art.

Fan Friday - MAG Gymnastics

This week we will highlight the underappreciated sport of Men's Artistic Gymnastics (MAG).

Gymnastics has existed for over 2,000 years, but its development as a competitive sport began just over 100 years ago.

The Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation, which evolved into the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), was formed in 1881, opening the way for international competition.

The first large-scale meeting of gymnasts was at the 1896 Olympics. Gymnasts from five countries competed in events, which included men's horizontal bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, rings, and vault.

Seven years later in 1903, the FIG organized its first world championships for men exclusively. At the 1924 Games in Paris, the basis of modern Olympic gymnastics competition was firmly established. The athletes (men) began to compete for individual Olympic titles on each apparatus, as well as in combined individual and team exercises.

Fan Friday - Lacrosse

I am excited to post our first of many Fan Fridays, where we will highlight an underappreciated sport.

Lacrosse is one of North America's oldest organized sports, dating back to 1100 A.D., as a field game or ritual played by First Nations. The history of lacrosse is challenging to trace, for fact often meshes with fiction, and many aspects of the sport's history have been passed on as folklore.

Lacrosse evolved in Canada, with the National Lacrosse Association of Canada being formed in 1867, it was the Dominion of Canada’s first governing body of sport. There is a lot of mythology surrounding lacrosse. Some say parliament made it an official sport in 1867, however, there is no evidence to prove this claim. While there may not have been any official parliamentary record of lacrosse being proclaimed Canada's national sport in 1867, it was arguably the de facto national sport for many decades. Lacrosse was confirmed as Canada’s official summer sport in 1994.

I am Super excited to launch my online e-commerce business today! Caremik Studios came about because my two sons were involved in activities and sports that were not as popular as the big four. This made it very hard to find merchandise to show my support. So, I decided to create stuff for other moms in the same situation. I am starting out with the sports that my sons were involved with (lacrosse and gymnastics), and I plan to add more each week. If there is something you don't see, please let me know -- and I will be glad to add it to the list.
