I saw a post on Facebook today from a proud longarmer displaying a ribbon she received. I don’t know when CQA started sending out these ribbons, but I am very very pleased to see a quilting organization finally recognizing the work that longarmers do to help elevate a quilt to award status. I do wish that local guilds would consider this as well.

I think it has been a very long while since I have posted any quilt pics. Here are a few quilts that hung recently in the Langley show. This first quilt was made by Lisa Brandt.

Ok, I finished this sweet little quilt for my new granddaughter Ophelia. Using cotton double gauze as a backing worked out fabulous! The quilt has a delicious soft drapy quality.

I don’t think I would recommend this type of backing for a sewer with a domestic machine, but using a long arm worked just fine. It was a little bit finicky as the fabric is quite stretchy. Just don’t pull it too tight. I did have one little spot that pleated. But it was easy to fix.

My biggest concern was that the batting would migrate through. Perhaps it will in time, but I really don’t think it will. All in all, the experiment was a great success and will be my new go to for baby quilts.

My social media skills are really sliding these days. Let me see if I can improve that. I just returned from a week long quilt retreat followed by a week long visit to my daughter’s house. They just had their second baby girl and her name is Ophelia Carolyn. She is such a little sweetheart. While I was away I contracted a bit of a cold, so today will be a light one in the studio. I made this little quilt at retreat, and I’ve been dying to see how this cotton gauze fabric will behave as a quilt backing. I purchased both the panel for the quilt and the cotton gauze at Essem Textiles Co. You can find them in Cloverdale or on line at www.essemtextiles.com. Stay tuned and I will let you know how it goes!

Sometimes custom quilting means using restraint. In the case of these Sri Lankan batik panels, simple outlining was all they needed. I also stitched the lines in the background for more stability. And Deepani’s husband framed them beautifully, don’t you think?
