Even though it’s been a few years since I’ve had my own business, for some reason the shop has come up in conversation lately.
I think it’s sort of the price you pay when you follow a certain dream or goal . At some point you may have to accept that it didn’t work out the way you were expecting it to, and maybe you missed out on getting a “real” career. But honestly I don’t know if I would have done it any other way. I think I would have always wondered “what if”, had I done something else. At this age I feel much more free, freer than I did when I was younger, of the expectations of myself. In fashion and having a store, it’s this endless hamster wheel of get some press, get some sales, have a slow period, chase some more press, get some more sales. Keep chasing that small piece of gratification that is never fully fulfilled. It’s never enough , it’s a series of triumphs and tribulations. I think I kept trying for so long to make this creative practice into a business because I didn’t want to it to feel like everything I had invested into over the years was in vain. I guess it’s a chance you take, even if you don’t realize at the time you are taking a chance. I think also there were some beautiful connections and friends that came from that store. How things can turn out not as originally expected but still bear some beautiful fruit.
