From Spain with love…from The Creative Daughter💕

My recent journey to Spain and Portugal was about much more than travel. It was an opportunity to immerse myself in the extraordinary equestrian traditions of Andalusia —the horses, the horsemanship, the culture and, of course, the beautiful traditional clothing.

As a designer and maker, I wanted to see these garments for myself. To study how they are constructed, understand the details that make them authentic, and learn more about the traditions behind what riders wear. I was invited into three traditional atelier workshops, where my connection to the craftsmen and designers was instantaneous.

To say I’ll be coming home inspired would be an understatement and I am very excited about what comes next.

The Creative Daughter is honoured to continue offering traditional Working Equitation outfits inspired by the equestrian heritage of Spain.

These pieces bring together the authenticity and character of traditional attire with the quality, fit and careful craftsmanship you have come to expect from The Creative Daughter.

For me, this is about more than recreating a beautiful look. It is about respecting the history behind the clothing and helping Working Equitation riders here in Canada and North America dress for their sport with greater knowledge, confidence and authenticity.

My time in Spain and Portugal has given me a whole new appreciation for the generations of craftsmanship behind these garments—and I can’t wait to bring what I’ve learned back to my own cutting table.

Portugal 🇵🇹 Day 1. Velvet, wool and BUTTONS!

Well as if the amazing experience in Jerez, working with USA Working Equitation wasn’t enough of a dream come true, today I had the pleasure to meet with Mário Alfaiate’s son and granddaughter, Roberto and Inez.
To most people they are just tailors a little sewing shop in a somewhat obscure area of Portugal but to me they represent three generations of traditional working equitation attire.
Inez was gracious to answer all my questions and let me inspect and enjoy the beauty that she and her father create.
As a seamstress who is relatively new to this style of work (less than 3 years for working equitation outfits) I was thrilled to know that my work, my styles and my quality is completely on par with what Roberto showed me today. Phew! 😅
I will certainly take home some great information and apply some time honoured techniques to my attire moving forward. It appears this old dog can still learn a few new tricks! Thank you Roberto and Inez for such a memorable afternoon .

Spain 🇪🇸 Day 13…Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (again)!

Today my travel buddy Denise Lea Jensen and I said adios to Jerez and ola to Lisbon, Portugal!

I will eventually summarize my insane adventure at WAWE Working Equitation but for now, please follow along as we enjoy the sights and sounds of Portugal.
