Thursday is Wildfire Education Day! Where we share more about a tactic, strategy, tool or piece of equipment that is used in the effort to fight wildfires.
Today we learn more about the dozer guard and its many purposes.
When a dozer or dozer group puts a trail around the wildfire, the initial reason is to remove the vegetation and leave a line of mineral soil, which will not burn. This becomes a fuel break that a slow moving ground fire is less likely to cross.
The fuel break also becomes a vegetation free zone for firefighters to work from. They are able to lay out hoses along the line, and use a “Y” or “T” shaped valve to have the main line continue and another line be used to head into the vegetation.
The fire guard also becomes a transportation corridor. All terrain equipment may be moving crews, fuel for the dozers, water or any other supplies needed to assist the fire fighting work.
Once the fire is extinguished, consultation occurs with local stakeholders that were impacted to assist in determining what portions, if any of the fire guard should remain or be reclaimed. The goal is to reclaim all the fire guard.
The fire guard is a strategic tool that assists in the operational efforts, the logistical efforts and safety on the fire line.
We thank all those who assist in any way fighting the wildfires. Stay safe.
