Today we spotlight the Dangerous Tree Fallers (DTF).
Depending on the agency or jurisdiction, these professionals may have different titles, but their role is consistent, remove hazardous trees and keep others safe.
It takes time to become a DTF. Safety training, learning or apprenticeship under other experienced fallers, as well as safely dropping numerous trees. Each tree is a little different, the size, lean, hill slope, access, escape routes, species, rot, fire damage, adjacent trees, or any other characteristics makes it unique.
Great skill is displayed when falling a tree which has been damaged by fire. The tree has its structure compromised, and becomes less predictable. The knowledge and experience of the DTF is relied upon to get the tree to the ground.
DTFs are masters of the chainsaw. They are the tree whisperers. They do not get special treatment at camp, same chow line, same field for their tent, same port-a-potties, same car alarm going off while trying to sleep. They are often one of the first into an area, so they blaze the trail.
The DTF role is one of the most dangerous and highly skilled positions on a wildfire. Because of the difficult work they do, others are in a safer environment to fight fire.
