It’s been an amazing experience, but Multiplying Equality is coming to an end. We are so thankful to everyone in this community who helped organize and support initiatives, discuss and educate on issues, and volunteer a helping hand. We’ve been inspired by so many people over the years, and learned so much from your generosity and compassion.

We have done a lot of reflecting this summer, and realized that the way we have been doing things isn’t creating the kind of impact we want to make. We felt that it was our responsibility to take some time to decide how we should move forward, and for now, it feels right to say goodbye.

Our goal was to bring together people with diverse passions and perspectives, to encourage the change we want to see around us and in ourselves. While there is always more we wish we could have achieved, it does feel like we accomplished this in a small way.

We are so thankful for the mentorship of the organizations that we have been lucky enough to partner with. Please follow the links below to directly support the good work that they do year round.

With love and gratitude,
M.E.

In light of recent events around the shooting in New Zealand, we decided to make our last blog post of the year about allyship rather than the environment. We thought about how to post constructively on this issue rather than just sharing articles about the actual event, and have collectively gathered some methods that you can go about implementing into your life!

As an Albertan, our average energy consumption amounts to 7,200 kWh per person in comparison to the national average of 4,500 kWh per person. In response to this issue, we suggest a number of household habits to implement in everyday life. Operation Friendship Seniors Society is on it’s 50th year of serving Edmonton’s inner city! OFSS is a non-profit society that focuses on community-based preventative social services for seniors in the inner city. Their goal is to improve the quality of the life for seniors over the age of 55 and are in need. This includes affordable housing options, where they connect with landlords and housing agencies to ensure safe and affordable housing can exist. Our group got the opportunity to make lunch for the residents at OFSS. Team members were whipping up some sandwiches and soup, then got to sit and chat with the community members, and some got to play board games. There are so many ways to get involved in OFSS, please visit: http://www.ofss.org/programs/volunteer/ if you are looking for more ways to get involved in your community!

When we think of coal-fired energy, images of dusty train conductors shoveling heaps of black rock into a raging hot furnace might come up. However, while awesome coal might have been in the past, it’s not without its harm. Our latest blog post outlines the damaging impact of coal and how we can remediate our energy consumption through alternative means of transportation. http://multiplyingequality.com/energy-consumption

Getting over 80 haircuts done in a span of 4 hours could not be possible without Edmontonian barbers and hairdressers from Avenue Salon (Loral and Rufaro), Pony Tails Horseshoes Salon (Barb, Tommy, and Mel), Jenny Hoang, and Lawrence Woo. Two of the hairdressers from Avenue Salon's portrait could not be taken, but we'd like to thank them, and the rest of the barber's and hairdressers for their volunteered time!

This past weekend we were able to host our second Community Clean Cuts (C3) at Boyle Street Community Services! Our C3 event is intended to meet people where they are at and provide free haircuts to community members experiencing homelessness, and who are unable to afford to afford this luxury on a monthly basis. With the community response we received from last year, we decided to run this event again. This year, over 80 haircuts were done in a span of 4 hours with the assistance of Edmontonian barbers and hairdressers from Avenue Salon (Rufaro, Ashlea, and Loral), Ponytails and Horseshoes Salon (Barb, Tom, and Mel), Jenny Hoang, and Lawrence Woo.
When you go for a regular haircut/styling, you are able to spend invaluable time speaking to the stylist and others around; here, members of the Edmonton community were able to share meaningful conversations, and engage in a further understanding of one another.
A portrait photographer, Jordan Hon, was a new addition to this year’s event, and it had more implications that we could have wished for. Community members are able to receive images of themselves, family, and friends. We often think of the immediate and physical needs behind homelessness, but we don’t go beyond to understand what other needs can be met. The pictures are a reminder of a network they are part of, and that they are not as isolated as they might feel.
This event could not be possible without the collaboration of Boyle Street staff, hairdressers and barbers, a professional photographer, and Multiplying Equality volunteers!

Thank you to everyone that was able to come out last week on a cold Wednesday night! We were honored to have Petra Schulz and Mathew Wong come out and speak about our opioid crisis! In the picture, Matthew is teaching participants how to administer Naloxone so if they use their Naloxone kit, it is done properly!
