Good morning and welcome to another edition of The Not An Island Chippy Tour!
This week’s taste test was a last minute panic change because our original destination was unavailable! So we turned ourselves around and landed at the Blackfish Pub.
A very generous portion of cod, I couldn’t eat all of mine (I left fish behind, a crime!)
Right off the hop you can probably tell from the photo, the batter was undercooked. So the crispy factor was not there. It’s also quite thick and unfortunately was a bit soggy. The fish however, was cooked well. They are nice chunky pieces and were moist and flaky. Tartar sauce was great. This was $25 and I’m sorry, I forgot to ask about the oil.
My hot tip would be to order this extra crispy to combat the sogginess.
Overall good flavour, well cooked fish, tasty fries, large portion🐟🍟

This week’s Chippy Tour took us to Joe’s Cabin in Lower Gibsons! For you old-time Coasters, it’s where Ken’s Lucky Dollar used to be.
We thought we had a reservation, but it turns out the reservation booker was a day ahead. She’s fired. 😂 Fortunately, the staff happily found room for all 7 of us on a super busy night.

Now, to the fish and chips.

We were impressed. The fish was cooked perfectly- flaky, moist, and not overdone. The batter was light, crispy, and had great flavour (which, as our loyal followers know, isn’t always a given 😅). We felt the portions were generous and fairly priced. The fries were excellent, and while the coleslaw wasn’t a creamy one, it was fresh and crunchy.

For those who are curious, the fish isn’t locally caught and it’s cooked in Prairie Gold canola oil.

Overall, we really enjoyed this one and would definitely recommend it. The staff were incredibly friendly and the service was excellent. 😊

This week’s Not An Island Chippy Tour review is a little late because I was busy catching my own fish. 🎣😂

This week we made our way to Monks on Marine in Powell River.

The highlights? 🍺 The beer was cold, the service was fantastic, and you really can’t beat the view.

As for the fish and chips… the judges thought the batter was a little thicker/heavier than we prefer, the portion was on the smaller side for the price. The fish itself was cooked well, but overall it didn’t quite reel us in. Still a solid contender.

That said, it edged out last week’s stop at Sharkey’s, but didn’t knock The Backeddy out of first position! 😅

The taste testing continues and my waistline continues to grow! Happy Wednesday friends!

This week the Not An Island Chippy Tour took us to Sharkey’s Fish Locker in Roberts Creek- a place that came highly recommended by so many of you!

My esteemed panel of judges all ordered the cod, and we just squeaked in before they put up the “No More Orders Tonight” sign. 😮‍💨 Pictured is the half order, it was plenty of food for me! We found the smaller pieces easy to eat without cutlery, but did find the fish slightly overcooked (eek!, I’m sorry!)
Here’s what stood out:
🐟 Nice, crispy batter.
🍟 Great fries.
♻️ Bonus points for having a thoughtful recycling station for all of the compostable packaging.
Overall, it was a solid stop on the Not An Island Chippy Tour. We’ve still got plenty of fish and chips left to sample before we crown a Sunshine Coast favourite! It’s shaping up to be a fun race!

I fish-and-chipped my way across England… so naturally it only makes sense that I do the same thing on the Sunshine Coast. 😂

First stop: Egmont. The Back Eddy Pub!
Backeddy Resort and Marina

Very generous portions. Golden crispy batter, perfectly cooked rockfish, great fries, excellent tartar sauce. I highly recommend adding the apple coleslaw! And that view! This is definitely going to be a tough one to beat.

Consider this the official start of my quest to find the best fish & chips on the Coast, we’ll call it the Not an Island Chippy Tour 😁
