Monumental in every sense โ eight feet of luminous white ground bound top and bottom by sweeping black bands that hold this entire world between earth and sky. Elder Peter G. Migwans, of M'Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island, built the composition the way the Woodland tradition teaches: nothing separate, nothing standing alone.
Across the centre, a dense gathering of beings emerges from a single unbroken line โ eagles and cranes, bears and fish โ their forms overlapping so completely that where one ends and the next begins is left for the viewer to discover. Inner shapes glow within their bodies in the x-ray manner, revealing hearts, spirits, and the life lines that pass between them. At the right stands a Chief in earth-red, looking out over the gathering, turquoise and gold feathers falling below like a wing in descent โ the watcher, the guide, the one who remembers.
The title says the rest. All We Have: Mother Earth, the animals, the water, the sky, the people, and the teachings that bind them โ held in balance, and held in trust. Elder Migwans carried that message forward across a lifetime of painting, as an artist, a mentor, and a cultural guardian for Anishinaabe students throughout Ontario and Michigan. Among the largest works of his career, this painting stands as a cornerstone of his artistic and cultural legacy.
