HMCS Sackville is proud to support the Dartmouth Yacht Club Convoy Cup Sailpast on Saturday, August 29th!

Each year, recreational sailors depart Bedford Basin carrying the banners of merchant marine and naval vessels lost during the Battle of the Atlantic, re-enacting the historic convoys that served as Europe's lifeline in World War II.

HMCS Sackville will serve as the flagship, where veterans, families, and dignitaries will review the fleet as each vessel renders a salute. The Sailpast commences at 1100, with Admiral McFadden serving as the Reviewing Officer.

We are honoured to be part of this moving tribute linking past to present.

Early in the Second World War, York Redoubt was the "nerve centre" for harbour defences, including an anti-submarine net which stretched across the harbour's entrance from the Redoubt to McNabs Island. York Redoubt remained in military use until 1956.

Today, you can wander among the 200-year-old fortifications while enjoying the panoramic views of Halifax Harbour and the open Atlantic.

On August 19, 1942, nearly 5,000 Canadians landed on the beaches of Dieppe, France, as part of an Allied raid during the Second World War. They made up the vast majority of the 6,100 troops who took part in the operation.

The Dieppe Raid came at a devastating cost. More than 900 Canadians lost their lives, nearly 2,000 were taken prisoner, and many others were wounded.

Though it remains one of the bloodiest days in Canadian military history, the bravery and determination shown at Dieppe provided important lessons that contributed to future Allied successes, including the 1944 D-Day landings in Normandy.

Today, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of the Canadians who fought at Dieppe.

Did you know? The Halifax Citadel once helped ships tell time. ⚓ This historic photo from around 1920 shows the Citadel’s Time Ball, which was raised just before noon and dropped precisely at 12:00 pm. Captains in Halifax Harbour watched for the signal so they could set their marine chronometers before heading out to sea. Long before smartphones and GPS, this was one of the harbour’s most important daily routines. ⏰
