💌There is never a race to move a child to a forward facing position.
In each seat by weight alone (and in other provinces/territories) Sebastian could be turned forward facing. But! As Nova Scotia’s new law states “Children must remain in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 2 years old and weigh more than 10 kg (22 lbs)”.
Why? Because it will keep children safer.

When we know better, we do better ….and even update outdated laws!
Bravo, Nova Scotia, on being the first province to implement longer rear facing use.
And bravo to the parents and caregivers buckling up each and every day. Commit to follow the law and then explore what practicing extended rear facing use looks like. It really can prevent injury and will keep your kids safest.

As of October 19, we’re becoming the first province to put into law rear-facing until at least age 2.

The other part of the new law is that children must use a 5-point harness until at least age 4.

We listen and we don’t judge. Let’s talk! What’s easy about the new law? Are there any perceived difficulties to the change?

If you live in another province or territory ask those in government why children aren’t rear facing to age 2. It can and will save lives. 🚙❣️

Thank you to CBC's Alex Guye for visiting the shop so we could talk about the new Car Seat Laws taking effect in Nova Scotia on October 19, 2026.

🚗 🚗 Do you have questions about rear facing your child until age 2? Ask us below! We keep a team of Child Passenger Safety Technicians on staff and are quite knowledgeable in a wide variety of car seat fit and questions.

NOTE: It is quite common not to need to purchase another seat to remain rear facing to two. Every convertible car seat we've sold at Nurtured has extended rear-facing. In fact, all of our convertible seats allow rear-facing to at least 40lbs and at the least 43" in height. In many cases this means a child can remain rear-facing until their 4th birthday!

P.S. Keep in mind, the other portion of the law that is coming into effect on Monday is keeping children age of 4 or under in a 5-point harness. Again, this is now the minimum age before you can consider a booster. Through the years we always receive plenty of questions about putting a 3-year old into a booster. We listen to this inquiry without judgement and actually have car seats to recommend that simply might not be obvious. In many cases, we commonly find just a few more harness adjustments can be made to a convertible seat. All of our seats that forward face with a harness go up to 65lbs and up to 49 inches or more.

New rules around child car seats come into effect on Oct. 19 as part of Nova Scotia's new Traffic Safety Act. Children will now remain in rear-facing seats until they are two years old. As the CBC's Alex Guye reports, some parents are already following the rules.
