Why Is There a Wait for Cataract Surgery?

We understand that waiting for a specialist appointment or cataract surgery can be frustrating.

Once your optometrist determines that a referral is needed, it is sent to an ophthalmologist (eye surgeon). The specialist's office then reviews and triages referrals based on medical urgency before scheduling consultation appointments.

Ophthalmologists are managing a high volume of referrals while serving a growing number of patients. In the past few years, in Hamilton, there have been a lot of specialists that have retired or unfortunately, have passed away. As a result, consultation appointments may take several months, and surgery may take even longer.

While you wait, your optometrist can continue monitoring your vision and eye health. If you notice significant changes in your vision or have concerns, please contact our office. Additional fees may apply for reassessment visits.

We know waiting isn't easy, and we appreciate your patience as specialists work through their referral lists.

What Happens If I Need Cataract Surgery?

Being told you have cataracts can feel overwhelming, but understanding the process can help.

If your cataracts are affecting your vision, your optometrist will send a referral to an ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) for further evaluation.

The ophthalmologist reviews and triages referrals before scheduling a consultation appointment. Getting an appointment from their clinic can take 1-3 months. If surgery is recommended, a surgical date will be arranged through the surgeon's office.

After surgery, your eye needs time to heal before a final glasses prescription can be determined. Book an eye examination with your optometrist approximately 5–6 weeks after surgery, to finalize your new prescription.
