I'm passionate about giving new life to secondhand and pre-loved materials Hi, I'm Jessica! I am a self-taught sewist who began learning my craft in late 2020.

Since then, I have transformed my guest room at home into my sewing space and love taking on novel challenges and learning new things about the fibre arts. I am passionate about giving new life to secondhand materials and so many of my pieces are from thrifted fabrics. Most of my creations have been for my own enjoyment so I’m now testing the waters on sharing them with others!

I finally got around to making myself a Liya blouse with this thrifted satiny fabric after eyeing the pattern for about a year. I didn’t have quite enough yardage, so instead of cutting the neck tie on the fold, I had to cut two pieces and gingerly try to pattern-match it (I find solace in the famous quilters’ maxim, if the imperfection can’t be seen while on a galloping horse, don’t worry about it). I also took in the side seams a bit as well, both for fit and to squeeze out what I could from the fabric.

This was a quick make, taking a little over a day from assembling the paper pattern to finishing the hem. Though finishing seams with my serger would’ve been the faster route, I opted for classically beautiful French seams instead.

Much to my sewing machine repair guy’s relief, I will no longer be sewing multiple layers of wool on my vintage Singer. It was looong overdue, but I finally took the plunge and bought myself an industrial machine. A million thanks to Daniela at the Toronto Sewing School for helping me pick out the perfect machine 🥰

“Maybe I’ll keep this one for myself”: an all-too common refrain I utter when finishing something for my shop that I’m particularly fond of…and then immediately list 🫠 I’m still vacillating on this one, but for the time being she’s hanging in my closet. This tropical take on a classic jean jacket was made from a heavy, preloved tablecloth and scraps of denim, both thrifted from Value Village.

I don’t want to say I regret selling the HBC blanket coat I made last year, but let’s just say if I made it today, it would’ve stayed with me. The next best thing I could do was make something for myself from the scraps, so this envelope clutch is the end result. No pattern was used; I just played around with the remnants I had.

I initially quilted the wool with some stiffer mystery fabric I thrifted (something between buckram and interfacing), but ultimately wanted something with more oomph, so I unpicked it all (0/10 do not recommend) and cut out some fleece to stick between those layers. I made the bias tape from some buffalo check cotton and am kind of obsessed with it, and now I want to put it on everything I make.

This was a really fun scrap-busting project, and I ended making a few more clutches from different materials for my Etsy shop, JZPstitchcraftCA, that I will post in the next few days.
