Before sacrificing my vision just to fit a fast-consumption aesthetic, I want to share these kids’ hoodies I made with crop circle patches on the back. As I mentioned earlier, I think crop circles are a completely valid — and honestly wonderful — mystery for children to become fascinated by. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with the Bermuda Triangle. And because I still carry that childlike fascination within me, there was a period in my adult life when I became deeply obsessed with crop circles too. I may have less time now to disappear into those mysteries, but they still enchant me.
To me, faeries and aliens are not opposites. They are reflections of the same archetype filtered through different eras of human imagination. Faeries are nature spirits: beautiful and unsettling at once, tender and cruel in the way nature itself can be. They are not only delicate winged creatures holding glittering wands and posing prettily in shining dresses. They are strange. Wild. Otherworldly. Sometimes eerie. Sometimes adorable. Existing somewhere between fear and wonder.
And perhaps aliens are simply the modern mythology humanity created once it stopped looking into forests and started looking into the sky. Faeries are aliens because they belong to an ethereal realm beyond ordinary perception. Aliens are faeries from space. Different symbols for the same ancient feeling: the suspicion that something intelligent, magical, and unknowable exists just beyond the veil of our world.
