6 questions to ask yourself to determine if marleys is a good fit for you:

I’ve talked to over 200 dancers in the past year. Here’s the honest version of what I tell them.

1. Are you slipping in sneakers or struggling to feel the floor? marleys’ leather soles give you more slide and let you point and flex your foot more naturally. Fair warning: the jump from rubber to leather takes a few sessions to adjust to.

2. Do your current dance shoes leave your feet sore after a few hours? Our 8mm cushioned insole is built for bounce and shock absorption, with arch support. You stay comfortable deeper into the night.

3. Do you have plantar fasciitis or fallen arches? Same insole. It’s there to reduce fatigue and keep your feet supported while you dance.

4. Do you have a high instep, bunions, or get blisters from pressure? Go for Brushed Gold or Juniper. Both are sheep leather, which is our softest and most forgiving. Less rubbing, less pressure.

5. Do your feet swell or get hot over a long social? The leather lining helps with sweat, and the lace-up lets you loosen the fit as the night goes on.

6. Are you dancing outdoors on pavement or concrete? marleys are not the right shoe for that. Leather soles and rough outdoor surfaces don’t mix.

And if you’re deciding between styles: The Ava has a tapered pointed toe. The Cat is foot-shaped and unisex. That’s the main difference.

Spot the difference 👀

Left shoe: buckle holes on the front strap. Right shoe: buckle holes on the back strap.

That’s it. That’s the detail.

With the front strap, you need two hands to fasten it. With the back strap, you can do it with one. It sounds like nothing until you’re rushing out the door with a bag in one hand and a phone in the other, and you realise you have to put everything down just to put your shoes on.

Most shoe design is optimised for how the shoe looks when it’s already on your foot. This kind of detail gets obsessed over at a different stage, the part where you’re actually living in the shoe. Putting it on, adjusting it mid-social, taking it off at the end of the night.

When a brand gets that right, you feel it immediately. You just didn’t know to look for it before.

That’s the kind of design philosophy I think dance shoes need more of. Less decoration, more consideration.

Dancers, next time you’re shopping for heels or sandals with an ankle strap, look for this. The buckle on the back strap means you can get in and out of your shoes with one hand, adjust the fit mid-social if your feet swell, and do all of it without stopping the conversation.

POV: You gave the WRONG size recommendation. For your own brand. 🤡

A friend told me she’s an EU 39. I said go for a Women’s 8. Seemed logical.

Nancy corrected me.

Here’s what she explained: every brand grades their shoes differently. The EU 39 in one brand is not the same as the EU 39 in another. We don’t actually know what that number means without more context.

A bit of background on how marleys sizing works. When we were developing the shoes, we needed to pick a starting point. We chose EU 38 as our sample size, set it as a Women’s 7.5, and then graded everything from there in US sizing by inches rather than EU increments. We’re a North American brand, so that’s the range we worked from.

Which means you can’t just add one to your EU size and land on the right marleys size. The conversion doesn’t work that way.

What does work: your foot measurement in centimetres. That’s the only number that stays consistent across brands.

My friend is 24.5cm. Nancy put her at a 7. When I followed up, my friend mentioned she has longer toes, so I bumped the recommendation to a 7.5.

What you’re watching is either one of the most wasteful steps in shoemaking, or one of the least.

Leather is not a neat, rectangular material. Every hide is different. Irregular edges, natural scars, thickness variations, weak spots. Cut by hand, pattern pieces are laid out by eye. Traditional hand-cutting uses roughly 50-60% of a hide. The rest is scrap.

Automatic cutting machines change that. Vision systems scan the hide, map its defects, and nest pattern pieces as tightly as possible. The best parts of the leather go to the most important components. Lower-grade areas go to smaller pieces. The result: up to 10% more of each hide becomes a shoe.

That doesn’t sound like much. But across hundreds of hides, it adds up to less leather needed, less scrap sent to landfill, and a lower footprint per pair.

It also reduces human error. Misaligned cuts, wrong dimensions, rejected pieces. Less rework, less waste from mistakes.

STOP DOING THIS 🚨 (from a shoe fairy godmother)

Using your foot to push off your other shoe is one of the most common ways people quietly destroy their shoes. Nancy breaks it down.

Here’s what’s happening. Every shoe has a heel counter, a piece of reinforcement built into the back of the shoe. It’s what gives the shoe its shape and holds your heel in place so it doesn’t slip out. When you use one foot to push the heel of the other shoe off, you’re collapsing that counter every single time. Once it’s gone, the structure goes with it and the shoe stops holding your heel properly.

The fix takes five seconds. Open the laces fully before you put your shoes on. Open them fully again before you take them off. Your hand does the work, not your foot.

Dance shoes are an investment, when you’re buying a pair, you’re also inheriting the responsibility to take care of them to extend their longevity. Whether it’s a pair of oxfords, loafers, even heels, take proper care when putting them on and taking them off to maintain the construction of your shoes ❇️

Your shoes will last longer, fit better, and keep doing what they’re supposed to do.

🎨 Don’t know which colour to choose?

Here’s the breakdown.

Platinum is textured 🐐 goat leather with a metallic, neutral white gold. It reflects light. If you want a shoe that makes a statement on the floor, this is the one. And if you’re worried about undertones, don’t be. Platinum sits right in the middle, not too warm, not too cool. It works on every skin tone.

Brushed Gold is made from 🐑 sheep leather, which is why it’s the softest thing we make. If you’ve ever wanted a shoe that molds to your foot and feels like it was made for you specifically, this is the leather to go for. The finish is pearlescent, so it absorbs light rather than reflecting it. More subtle than Platinum. Still a neutral, still pairs with almost everything.

Juniper is also from our buttery-soft 🐑 sheep leather for anyone who lives in black but wants something with a bit more going on. The base is black leather with a gold-green pearlescent finish over it. On the darker, moodier end of the range. Not bold, not flashy. Just a really good shoe.

🚨 No BS verdict on whether you need dance shoes and when to actually buy them.

If you’re dancing once or twice a week, hitting a weekly social, starting to build a friend group around the floor, that’s the sign. You’ve got the habit. Now your gear should catch up.

Or if your joints are starting to complain. Knees aching after a long night, lower back tightening mid-swing out. That’s not just tiredness.

Here’s what’s actually happening when you dance in rubber soles. Rubber soles or sticky shoes grip the floor. That’s great for walking. But when you’re rotating through a spin or turn, your foot needs to pivot. The rubber holds. That tension travels into your ankle, your knee, your hip instead of releasing through the floor. The joint pain people blame on dancing is often just their soles doing the wrong job.

Dance shoes use leather or suede soles that don’t fight with the floor & let you move across the floor, uninterrupted.

The one rule: if your feet hurt in your current shoes, change them. Doesn’t matter what level you are or how long you’ve been dancing. That problem doesn’t fix itself.

You don’t have to buy dance shoes right away. Just stop wearing shoes that fight you on the floor.
