Mother’s Day is a beautiful day to celebrate. It’s a day to honour some of the most sacrificial and unconditionally loving people among us. It’s often full of beautiful moments, well-deserved gifts and kisses from our littles, and hopefully some quiet time with your favourite treats, too.

But it can also be a difficult day — for those longing to be moms, for those with complex relationships with their mothers, those who never knew their moms, and those who have lost them.

I’m in the last camp. My incredible mom passed away just over 10 months ago. The void is huge, and the pain is deep. And yet, I also have three amazing small humans in my life. So much joy exists alongside so much grief.

I could write a book about what my mom meant to me — how close we were, and what a stunning person she was. Instagram doesn’t feel like the right place to document all of that, so I’ll simply say this:

Today feels hard. But also deeply meaningful. I see you, in whatever way you’re experiencing this day. All I know is that I am who I am because of my mom, and my life is abundant and full of love because of her.

Happy Mother’s Day. However the day finds you, may you give yourself space to feel the weight and fullness of all it brings.
