Russian Vasily Vasilevich Kandinsky was the first painter to purposely abandon figurative art in favor of abstraction. Detachment of the image content from our cognitive experience meant it was no longer clear.

For this reason, the painter supported his artistic intents with extensive exegesis. Talking about the meaning of lines and colors he reached the realm of the esoteric. Just like Scriabin, who did this in the opposite direction, he tried to assign painting a musical context. These aspects are referred to in "Composition VIII" as the title implies.

This work was created in the second period of the abstract Kandyńsky, when he gave lectures at the Bauhaus. What is characteristic here is geometrization of space with uniform development across the picture. Multidirectional straight and wavy lines add to its dynamics.

Color range is wide by remaining uniform inside the closed shapes and ”diluting out" only outside. Works by Kandinsky were laboriously formed as the painter's purpose was to achieve balance between the sensual and spiritual (meaning Esoteric) element in the work.

He also feared that his painting would get mistaken for wallpaper. Was this fear justified?

Holland's independence won in national independence struggle in the 17th century gave rise to the first modern-age republic. This meant the disappearance of court patronage. As it was the increasingly rich bourgeois that became consumers of the art in the first place, painters made them into main characters of their genre painting.

They portrayed them by taking care of the realistic reproduction of the matter, at their daily routine, wearing clean clothes and in neat and clean chambers. However, these pictures often contained a hidden content. It is no different in the case of "Allegory of painting" by Jan Vermeer van Delft, so greatly valued today for its technical quality. Conventionality of the scene is emphasized by the curtain drawn open. Is the title of the work accurate though?

It is true that Vermeer also depicted himself working with his back to the viewer but then he paints a model with a trumpet and a book by Thucydides - the attributes of Clio (the muse of history) - against the map of the whole of the Netherlands. Therefore, it may be an allegory relating to recent historical events.

Victory laurel on the muse’s head would imply that the painter’s work is a tribute to his brave compatriots and he shares their pride by placing his own image.
