Ok, I’m jumping in here a few days late, but I really wanted to take part in this challenge, even though our month got off to a rough start with a stomach flu 🤯
So- my story- one of my earliest memories of sewing was an old fashioned apron I made for a childhood friend, complete with ruffles and lace if I recall correctly, with much help from my mom. I loved sewing that thing! For my 10th birthday I picked out a remnant of fabric and made little pouches with Velcro closure for treat bags for each friend that came. My mom passed away shortly before I turned 14, but we did complete a few other sewing projects together. I took a couple correspondence sewing courses in high school to bump up my credit count, and always took a sewing machine with me, everywhere I moved, with the exception of my college dorm. I remember sewing with the machine on my lap, on the floor of our rented bedroom, the winter after my husband and I were married.
So the love of sewing has been there pretty much as long as I can remember. Starting in the summer of 2010, I attended our tiny local farmers market for a couple of years, with sewing, baking, produce and canned goods. After that, I started to do craft sales and for a few years I sold quite a few bowl covers (my main product) along with a lot of odds and ends.
By the time I gave birth to my third child in 2014, i realized I couldn’t keep up the way I wanted to. For the last 6 years I’ve done very little sewing for others- the odd project here and there or mending, but very limited.
Now that my youngest is 4, and our current house has a designated sewing space, I feel a bit more space to delve into my creative side again and am attempting to find the elusive creative life/work/home/kids/husband/homeschooling balance. Thanks for reading my essay and joining me on this creative journey too!
