Beautiful Joe. Arguably the most influential dog in history. Canadian writer, Margaret Marshall Saunders, wrote about the sad story of Joe in her 1893 novel, Beautiful Joe. Joe, an abused dog from Meaford, Ontario, found safety and refuge when adopted by Saunder’s family in the town. The book would go on to become one of the highest selling novels in Canadian history as well as being credited globally as one of the main starting points of the animals rights movement.
