🚨 Community Awareness Ontario Forest Fire Situation 🚨
If you checked the Ontario Forest Fire Info Map today you may have felt what many of us felt. Concern.
The official interactive map from the Ontario government shows dozens and dozens of active forest fires, heavily concentrated in the northwest region around Thunder Bay and far north. Many areas are marked High and Extreme danger, shown in yellow and red on the map, with a large restricted zone hatched in black. This rating comes from over 130 weather stations and updates through the day as conditions change.
Here in southern Ontario including Toronto, Mississauga, Windsor, Sault Ste Marie and the Timmins corridor the map currently shows more moderate to low danger in our immediate area. That does not mean we are unaffected.
Why this matters for us in the GTA
Smoke can travel hundreds of kilometres and affect air quality here even when fires are far away
Hot dry windy days can raise local risk very quickly
Many families have loved ones up north or travel for camping and cottaging this time of year
What we can do together as a community
1️⃣ No open burning. Please respect all local fire bans and municipal bylaws. Even backyard fire pits can be risky when wind picks up.
2️⃣ Check before you go. If you are heading north for camping, check the official fire map at lioapplications.lrc.gov.on.ca and Ontario Parks alerts before you leave.
3️⃣ Protect your air at home. On smoky days keep windows closed, limit strenuous outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check Environment Canada air quality readings. If you have asthma, heart conditions, young children or elders at home take extra care.
4️⃣ Have a plan. Keep a small emergency kit ready, keep phones charged, know your local emergency contacts.
5️⃣ Look out for each other. Check on neighbours, especially seniors and newcomers who may not be following updates.
Let us stay informed, stay kind and stay safe. Please share this post with family and friends, especially anyone planning travel up north or anyone sensitive to smoke.
If you see heavy smoke or flames call 911. For forest fires in Ontario you can report to 310 FIRE.
