Tomorrow I introduce to you a new body of work I have spent the last three months obsessively pouring my whole heart and soul into. After a brief period of rest but also feeling uninspired, coming to Egypt and beginning a meticulous design process and creative redirection reminded me what it was like to fall in love with what you do again; and the kind of love and beauty that attracts. This trip has held me during many gruelling lessons with life as the classroom and I won’t lie: For every moment of joy, freedom and burning artistic passion there has been moments of fatigue, disappointment and the loneliness of creating quietly and mostly alone. So much fear. But the greatest lesson of all was the courage to try again and not only that~ The courage to be your authentic self. To express it deeply and creatively~ a core principle of this passion project.

Tomorrow (Sunday) 8 PM EST I have the pleasure to open the door to this new world I’m building and I’m just so ecstatic about it. Thanks for sticking around ❤️

Lately I’ve been thinking about the strange ways we recognize ourselves across places we were never told to call home.

Growing up, Egypt was merely a faraway land frozen in my daydreams. My mother’s birthplace yes, but tangibly nothing more than a photograph in the family albums, the distinct taste of cumin and lemon squeezed ful mudammas for breakfast and the Qu’ran playing in my grandfather’s kitchen.

I won’t be the first second generation immigrant to tell you of the uncanny familiarity of a place that can live in your blood and bones before even stepping on its soil. It’s when you finally make the pilgrimage in your adult life that you feel rooted, firmly planted there.

Spending the last few months in Cairo has reinvigorated my creative drive and gave me the push I needed to try again, inspiring a collection I have never been so excited to share.

I am satiated by all of its senses, inspired by its colorful laughter and ancient architecture, moved by its indomitable spirit, seduced by its fragrant oils and incensed alleys.

In times of self doubt, creative block and existential dread, it has held me most patiently with grace and tenderness. An amiable nod to go back to the drawing board and try again.

So a lot of designing, documenting, interviewing and writing it has been.

ADIRE. (ah-dee-ray) Derived from the Yoruba words “adi” meaning to tie and “re” meaning to dye.
Traditionally created through resist-dyeing techniques, patterns are formed by binding, stitching, or covering sections of fabric before dyeing revealing intricate designs once undone. Adire silk is mostly commonly used to make boubou dresses worn across Africa.

Here it is reimagined in our Cape Coast shirt and new TUMI Pants. Releasing tomorrow!
