Attachment Parenting International's Principle #7, Positive Discipline, includes the technique of "time-ins". This is a compassionate and constructive approach to managing children's behavior. Instead of using traditional time-outs, where a child is isolated as a consequence for misbehavior, time-ins aim to foster emotional connection and understanding. During a time-in, the parent or caregiver brings the child who misbehaved to a calm and safe space. They sit or stay with the child, offering comfort, empathy, and emotional support. This provides an opportunity for the child to express their feelings and emotions, and for the parent to acknowledge and validate those emotions. The focus of a time-in is not punishment but rather emotional regulation and communication. The child learns to identify and understand their feelings and the reasons behind their behavior, while the parent helps them find constructive ways to handle their emotions. Time-ins promote a healthy parent-child relationship by emphasizing empathy and nurturing, which can lead to better behavior in the long run due to the respect demonstrated and the nurtured connection. Time-ins also allow children to develop emotional intelligence and self-awareness while feeling secure in their attachment to their caregiver.

Our time-in space is our couch. Time-ins can look different for every family and with each child, and they vary from instance to instance. It can certainly be difficult to calm yourself, let alone a child, when tempers are raised. Taking time out for some much needed gets the wheels turning in my brain. The reality is that in order to effectively care for children, parents and caregivers need regular replenishment through social, emotional, and practical support. This replenishment leads to children flourishing and prevents stress and struggles from building up. Replenishment can be achieved by connecting with others, joining parent groups, setting realistic goals, prioritizing self-care, and seeking help when needed. It is important for parents to recognize their own needs and take steps to replenish themselves, as it directly impacts their ability to parent in a proactive and positive manner. Ignoring the need for replenishment can lead to parenting burnout and negatively affect overall well-being. Prioritizing replenishment is crucial for both personal and family health and growth.

Thank God that my amazing community has rallied around me and found me a place to live temporarily! They have also donated so many toys from my children and I am so unbelievably grateful that my children will still have a good christmas!
