I had the pleasure of visiting the Niigata Nippo Media Ship, home of The Niigata Nippo, one of Niigata’s leading newspapers.
Through my connection with the newspaper’s “Global Niigata” column, I have had the opportunity to contribute articles from Toronto.
My latest article, “The Blue Jays: A Source of Canadian Pride,” was published in the August 3 issue. ⚾️🇨🇦
The Media Ship, inspired by the sails of the historic Kitamaebune trading ships, is truly an iconic symbol of Niigata. ✨
After the visit, I enjoyed lunch with a former classmate who now works at Niigata Nippo, as well as friends with whom I once worked on community revitalization projects many years ago.
A wonderful opportunity to reconnect, exchange ideas, and talk about the future of Niigata.
Thank you for the meaningful and memorable time!

🇨🇦🇯🇵 Building bridges between Niigata and Toronto!
I had the pleasure of paying a courtesy visit to the Niigata Prefectural Government’s Tourism Promotion Division.
We shared updates on the activities of the Niigata Association of Toronto and discussed upcoming events, with continued support from the Tourism Promotion Division.
I also had the opportunity to exchange ideas with representatives from the Sake Promotion Office of the Industrial Labor Department. 🍶
From Niigata to Toronto, and from Toronto back to Niigata—
we will continue building connections and sharing the many charms of Niigata with Canada and beyond. ✨

新潟まつり始まりました‼️

The three-day festival began with the Grand Folk Dance Parade on the very first night.
The temperature, the humidity, and the excitement in the air all reached their peak.
Dancers and spectators became one, filling the summer night with unforgettable energy. ✨

３日間にわたる祭りは、初日の夜の大民謡流しから幕を開けました。気温も、湿度も、会場を包む熱気も最高潮。
踊り手も観客も一体となり、夏の夜が熱く輝きました。✨
企業や団体ごとに踊るので、すれ違うたびに他社のお友達にも会え、まさに新潟を支える人たちのまつりと実感、大切ですね！

📸 映えない写真を上げるシリーズ

📸 The "Not-So-Instagrammable" Photo Series
I've been visiting city and town halls almost every day lately, so I haven't had many Instagram-worthy photos to share!
Instead, here's Dankurō, the legendary raccoon dog (tanuki) of Tagami Town in Niigata.
According to local folklore, Dankurō lived on Mt. Gomado, a mountain famous today for its beautiful hydrangeas. It's a charming reminder that every place has stories hidden beneath its scenery.
Each summer, Tagami celebrates the Dankurō Festival with fireworks and traditional Bon dancing, keeping this local legend alive.
Discovering stories like these is one of the best parts of traveling.

連日、市町村役場めぐりが続いており、インスタ映えする写真がありません（笑）。
ということで、今日は田上町のマスコット（？）「団九郎（だんくろう）」をご紹介。
団九郎は、新潟県田上町の護摩堂山に住んでいたと伝わる伝説のタヌキ。紫陽花の名所として知られる護摩堂山には、こんな昔話も残されています。
毎年夏には、花火大会や盆踊りで賑わう「団九郎まつり」も開催され、町の人々に今も親しまれています。
旅先では、こんな地域の物語に出会えるのも楽しみのひとつですね。

知る人ぞ知る、新潟の織物「葛塚縞」

Kuzutsuka-jima: A Hidden Textile Heritage of Niigata
Not all of Japan's textiles are world-famous. Some were created to support everyday life in local communities.
Kuzutsuka-jima is a durable cotton fabric woven in Niigata since the late Edo period using thick indigo-dyed yarn made from locally grown cotton and indigo.
Production expanded during the Meiji era, but after World War II, synthetic fabrics, ready-made clothing, and changes in rice farming—including the conversion of wet paddies into well-drained fields—reduced the need for durable indigo workwear. Commercial production ended in 1972.
Today, the Kuzutsuka-jima Handweaving Association continues to preserve this unique local tradition by hand.
Every thread tells the story of the land and the people who lived there.

華やかな伝統工芸だけが、日本の織物ではありません。
葛塚縞は、江戸時代後期に越後平野で生まれた丈夫な木綿織物。虫よけ効果のある藍で染めた太い綿糸を使い、原料の木綿や藍も近隣の村で育てられた、まさに地域に根ざした織物です。
明治時代には東北や北海道まで販路を広げましたが、戦後は化学繊維や既製服の普及に加え、水田の乾田化が進み、深い田んぼでの農作業が減少。丈夫な藍染めの作業着の需要も減り、1972年に商業生産を終えました。
現在は葛塚縞手織りの会の皆さんが、その技術を未来へ伝えています。
土地の歴史と人々の暮らしが織り込まれた一枚。こうした地域の織物に触れるたび、日本のものづくりの奥深さを感じます。

🇯🇵 カナダと三条市をつなぐ架け橋に🇨🇦

🇨🇦 Building a Bridge Between Canada and Sanjo City 🇨🇦🤝🇯🇵
Despite the heavy rain and weather warnings today, I had the honor of paying a courtesy visit to the Regional Management Division at Sanjo City Hall.
Located in the heart of Niigata Prefecture, Sanjo City is internationally known as a city of craftsmanship, famous for its exceptional metalworking, knives, and other high-quality manufactured products. Many people may not know that Sanjo is also a sister city of Vaughan, Ontario, just north of Toronto.
During our meeting, we discussed future opportunities for international exchange and how I might help promote Sanjo City and Niigata tourism in the Toronto area.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Ryan, who is currently serving in Sanjo as a Canadian Coordinator for International Relations (CIR).
Ryan promotes Canada in Sanjo, while I share the beauty of Niigata and Japanese culture in Toronto.
Although we work on opposite sides of the Pacific, we share the same mission—to build meaningful connections between Canada and Japan.
I look forward to continuing to strengthen those ties through culture, tourism, and friendship.

今日は、大雨警報が発令されるあいにくのお天気の中、三条市役所 地域経営課を表敬訪問させていただきました。
新潟県のほぼ中央に位置する三条市は、「ものづくりのまち」として世界に知られ、高品質な金属加工製品や刃物などで有名です。そして実は、トロントのすぐ北にあるオンタリオ州ヴォーン市と姉妹都市の関係にあります。
今回の訪問では、今後の国際交流の可能性や、トロントでの三条市・新潟県の観光PRへの協力について意見交換をさせていただきました。
さらに、現在カナダから三条市へ国際交流員（CIR）として赴任されているライアンさんともお会いすることができました。
ライアンさんは三条市でカナダの魅力を発信し、私はトロントで新潟県や日本文化の魅力を伝える——。
離れた場所で活動しながらも、同じ想いで日本とカナダをつなぐ仲間に出会えたことを、とても心強く感じています。
これからも、文化・観光・人とのご縁を結ぶ架け橋として、一つひとつの出会いを大切に活動してまいります。

🇯🇵 帰港中 ⚓️

🇯🇵 Back in My Hometown ⚓️
I've safely returned home and first visited the grave of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, someone I deeply admire, to pay my respects and let him know I've arrived safely.
Afterward, I visited Yahiko Shrine, one of Echigo's most revered shrines, and enjoyed a peaceful moment of reflection.
I'm enjoying the beautiful scenery and fresh air of Niigata and recharging my spirit.

無事に帰港し、まずは尊敬する山本五十六元帥のお墓へご報告に。
その後は、越後一宮・弥彦神社を参拝し、心穏やかな時間を過ごしました。

卒業式シーズン、いよいよクライマックス🌿

Graduation Season Comes to a Beautiful Close 🌿
As this year’s graduation season comes to an end, I’d like to thank everyone who chose my kimono rental and dressing services.
To conclude the season, I had the pleasure of dressing a lovely graduate in a refreshing summer kimono. ✨
She had decided since childhood that she wanted to wear a kimono—not a hakama—for her graduation ceremony.
The kimono was a beautiful Ro (lightweight summer silk kimono) lovingly gifted by her grandmother in Japan. Filled with family memories, she wore it with grace and elegance.
It suited her perfectly.
Congratulations on your graduation! 🌸

お宮参りの撮影でした👶🌸

Celebrating a Baby’s First Shrine Visit 👶🌸
It was a joy to welcome back a wonderful family I first met for their first child’s Miyamairi (baby’s first shrine visit) photo session—this time to celebrate the arrival of their second baby!
Their daughter has grown into such a caring big sister and was absolutely thrilled to welcome her little brother. 💕
Being invited back to celebrate another milestone with the same family is one of the greatest rewards of my work. It’s an honor to be part of these precious memories.
Congratulations to your beautiful family, and I wish you all the happiness and joy as your little one grows!

After weeks of cool weather, Toronto has suddenly been hit by a heat wave!
Today, I had the pleasure of dressing a client in a beautiful yukata for a garden wedding. ✨
A yukata gently swaying in the summer breeze under a blue sky is one of the season’s greatest pleasures.
Yukata season has officially arrived in Toronto! 🎐
