A little reminder to the moms, papas, nanays, Giju’, mémés, grampies, titas, uncles, or any guardians of any elementary aged kids on PEI:
The PEEC program on PEI has yearly coverage for eye exams for elementary kids. You can sign your kid up here:

What I need you to be really aware of, because it's time sensitive, is that kids who just graduated grade 6 are still considered to be elementary kids until August 31. So if your child is going into grade 7 and has not yet turned 13, you have until the end of August to have their eye exam covered by this program. Call us or stop in this week to get something booked, because we are booking into the end of August already!

The Program for Elementary Eye Care helps cover the costs of annual eye exams and up to 3 pairs of glasses, if needed, for children in grades 1 to 6. Who can participate? This is something I've always wanted to do, and after a lot of thinking and planning and consulting, I'm excited to offer our very first sensory-friendly day. On Tuesday, August 18, we are going to make a few changes to the office. My hope is that it makes the office more hospitable for anyone, kids or adults, that would like a low-stress, low noise eye exam. I've read a lot of literature from Autism Speaks, the PTSD Association of Canada, OCD Canada, and Brain Injury Canada on how to make our office as comfortable as possible for those with sensory issues.

Here's how this day will look a little different:
We're going to turn a lot of our lights off and let the natural light do its thing. We are going to turn off any background music and turn our phone ringers as low as they will go. We are offering longer appointment times in case you or your child need a little break, walk or snack partway through. We're also going to set up a side room as a little extra waiting room for some privacy. The staff and I are going to be wearing regular clothes instead of scrubs, because I think sometimes scrubs can feel intimidating.

If you would like to book yourself, your parent, or your child in one of these appointment slots, please contact us and let us know you want to be booked on the sensory-friendly day. You do not need to give us any justification for why you'd like a sensory-friendly appointment. If there is any extra accommodation that we could make, or anything you'd like us to know before the appointment, please be sure to tell us.

If this one goes well we hope to have more in the future! We are committed to being as accessible as possible, and part of that is accommodating people of all abilities.

Now that we're up and running, I thought it would be nice to post a little explainer on what services our office provides. Not everyone knows the full scope of what an optometrist can do, and our office has lots of shiny new equipment and features you may not have known about.

I promise we're working on getting back to everyone with appointment times! We've been busy beyond what we expected this week (the glasses have been flying off the shelves!) which is a good problem to have, I think. Sherri is trying to put a dent in those recalls, so if you haven't yet heard from us, we're working on it!
