2017 Lobster Seasons are about to start and this year fishermen are required to wear at all times a personal flotation device PFD. There are a few options available and I am going to show you the inflatable options available from MUSTANG survival. Before I start I want to be clear on two points when purchasing a PFD online. Firstly, USA approved PFD's are not approved for Canadian vessels and likewise Canadian PFD's are not approved for use in the USA. Make sure you buy from a seller in your respective country. Secondly, don't buy second hand PFD's. When your life depends on it does saving a few bucks really matter. Buy it new and know what you own.

The Mustang line comes with their HIT technology. This technology is maintenance free for 5 years and will only automatically inflate the PFD when submerged 4 or more inches under water. They will not inflate from rain, spray or humidity.

The first option is the MUSTANG ELITE 28 series. It provides 28 pounds of buoyancy and is TC approved. Price $289.99

When you look at the Elite 28 series there are several options signified by letterings or numbers. Each has a slight difference in design for specific use.

MD5153 - General use
MD5153-BC - Bass competition
MD5153-KY - Kayaking

The second option is a step above and is the MUSTANG ELITE 38 Series. It provides 38 Pounds of buoyancy and is TC approved. Price $319.99

What you get for an extra $30 is a more durable PFD built for offshore condition. The outer shell is a light weight body armour and there are abrasion patches for hard wearing areas.

Some of you might note that I have not included the cheaper MIT 100 series jackets. The simple reason is that they can and will inflate on water contact and thus not really suitable for commercial fishermen.
