The popularity of BJJ globally has influenced the demand for top quality BJJ uniforms and in the past has seen this growth on all continents, except for Africa. The recent interest in BJJ within South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar and Angola has placed a significant demand for BJJ gi's. In 2012 there were no BJJ gi brand in South Africa, allowing the opportunity for such a brand to be established

. Hanami was established early 2013 with the sole purpose of providing quality BJJ training equipment to Africa and the Middle-East. Hanami uncompromising approach led to one full year of research and development, to ensure that Hanami products compete globally. aim to fill the current demand as well as aim to be established as Africa’s top BJJ gi brand. Ultimately we aim to be considered as the number one choice for champions world wide. Hanami is the ancient Japanese tradition of spending time in nature and enjoying the coming of spring, by observing and appreciating the beauty of the Sakura, or cherry blossom. Modern Japanese considers the tradition of Hanami as a picnic or party under the Sakura, which today has become an annual major spring amusement in Japan, enjoying significant media exposure. Our primary logo represents five figures observing a ‘Sakura’ in such a way that they themselves form part of a ‘Sakura’, creating a sense of unity and single- mindedness. Each one of the five figures represent the five belt levels in BJJ, implying that one is exist in harmony with the other. The logo is modeled after traditional Japanese family crests, or ‘kamon’. The inner white circle implies a sense of unity amongst the figures through observation. Our secondary logo represents the first letter of the name (H)anami, with a strong link to ‘kanji’, or Japanese calligraphy. Our company slogan: ‘Reforming Traditions’.

2016 HANAMI GI-CHALLENGE - IMPORTANT NOTICE
It is with heavy hearts and careful consideration, that we cancel the 2016 Hanami Gi-Challenge. After consultation with the major role players, we are of the opinion that the current economical uncertainty in South Africa can be blamed for the lack of interest. At present only 15 athletes have registered for the Hanami Challenge, compared to the 54 athletes at the same time last year. The cost in hosting the 2016 Challenge total R52,000. Together with sponsors, we require at least 60 athletes to cover the basic costs of hosting the Challenge. We at Hanami are still committed in advancing the interests of BJJ in South Africa, and hope to do so again in the future in hosting another Challenge. All funds received from sponsors and athletes will be repaid. And this being said, we leave you with the interview of James Saks at the 2014 Hanami Gi-Challenge:

2016 HANAMI GI-CHALLENGE - IMPORTANT NOTICE

Due to the unfortunate economic circumstances reigning in South Africa, we at Hanami thought it well to move the 'Registration Fee Increase Date', from the 4th of April, to the 18th of April. Registration Fee Increase Date is the date on which the registration fee increases by R100, from R500 to R600. Athletes registering from the 4th of April till midnight the 17th of April will only pay R500. From the 18th of April, registration fee will be R600.

Please do take note, that unlike other tournaments in South Africa, the Hanami Challenge will not allow late registrations. Registration is subject to two requirements, (a) completing the registration form and (b) paying the registration fee. Should you not fulfil in both requirements by the 'Registration Closing Date' midnight of Friday 22 April, you will not be registered to compete at the 20116 Hanami Challenge.

We trust you find the above in order.

Keep on training and bring your A-game.
