It was the Almonte Fair this past weekend. I entered three items and came away with three 1st place ribbons! A dining table runner with a fish motif; a shirt made with fabric I had brought back with me from Tanzania; and my peacock coat/hat rack (now hanging in the front hall): as you walk past it, its eye glints at you. Fairs are always fun!

27 May 2024

Yesterday I gave a presentation at the Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum on the subject of 1920s fashions, under the title "The Bee's Knees".

I enjoyed researching the subject and I hope everyone enjoyed the presentation. It had been rescheduled from May 11 due to completion of the museum renovation work.

Here's a photo from the Studio Theatre, Perth ON production of Lady Susan, in October last year. This play was an adaptation of the Jane Austen story. The costume colours were inspired by the Bridgerton series.

This lovely certificate from the 2022 Eastern Ontario Drama League One-Act Play Festival arrived recently. In the meantime, last month I also won the 2023 award, this time for my costuming of "Whistler's Mother". It's always great fun and a good challenge.

I'm back from Tanzania. The quilt was sold at the TEMBO auction, which significantly exceeded its fundraising goal. This link will take you to my website and a few photos of my stay in Longido:

22 October 2023 I'm just back from a 5 week visit to Northern Tanzania where I taught young girls at Longido, for the Ottawa charity TEMBO. Before I left for Africa, I created a quilt which I...

WOMEN AND WATER: this quilt is going to a TEMBO fundraising auction next month.

The women in the Longido district of Northern Tanzania carry water on their heads in yellow canisters, often over great distances.

I was struck by the grace and elegance of these women, even while doing this very hard task.

Today I begin my journey to meet these women.

A STUDY IN BLUE: Here's my latest piece. A quilted wall hanging, mounted on a board with three coat hooks at the bottom, designed to be used as a coat rack. It's a Peacock, with five shades of blue in the tail, and three shades of blue in the body. Machine appliqued using decorative stitches. Recently displayed at a Smiths Falls quilt show.

HOW HARD COULD IT BE?

This is the question I asked myself several months ago when I decided to create backsplash tiles for my new kitchen.
And the answer? Very hard!
Starting with unglazed (bisque) ceramic tiles, my goal was to create over a hundred finished tiles, through a process of painting, glazing and firing. In addition, I also wanted to create a centre-piece panel of multiple tiles for the section of wall behind the stove.
It has been a long, complicated journey, but yesterday I was able to declare victory, as this picture shows. The learning curve was steep, and success only came after several failures. But the final result was worth all the effort.
My inspiration for the design was the Delft Tiles Company of The Netherlands: particularly their blue field tiles and their “Bowl with lemons and ladybugs” panel (HF-4b). On their website they write: “We hope our website inspires you”. It did.
