Today, we’re sharing our final personal message as the owners of Grady’s Feet Essentials.

As we prepare to pass the torch to Theresa and Mark, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on this journey and what it has meant to us.

There are far more people behind the Grady’s story than we could ever name in one video. To everyone who worked with us, supported us, encouraged us and shared in this journey, please know how deeply grateful we are.

This business has shaped our lives, our family and our marriage. It has given us challenges, opportunities, friendships and more wonderful memories than we could possibly count.

At the end of the video, we also share a little about what comes next for us. Although this is our final message as owners, it is not the end of the Grady’s Feet Essentials story. On September 1, Theresa (Tony’s cousin) and her husband Mark will begin their chapter, and we’re excited to see where they take it.

🎉 3 DAYS TO GO!

We’re counting down to September 1, when Kelli and Tony will retire and officially pass the torch to the new owners of Grady’s Feet Essentials, Theresa Thibadeau and Mark Walsh.

This was an emotional video for us to record. Peterborough is more than the place where we built our business. It is where we raised our family and became part of a community that supported us for more than four decades.

One of the greatest privileges of owning an independent local business has been the opportunity to give back to the city we love.

Tony shares how our spirit of giving began with supporting Fred Anderson and Little Lake Musicfest. From there, our involvement grew to include many arts organizations, community projects and local causes over the years. We’ll share photographs from some of those special moments throughout today’s video.

As Rotarians, we’re especially excited about the Rotary Club of Peterborough Accessible Playground project at Riverview Park & Zoo. As the final charitable contribution made by Grady’s Feet Essentials under our ownership, we are pleased to donate $5,000 to the project.

We’re also personally purchasing an engraved brick through the Buy a Brick campaign. It will become part of the playground pathway and a lasting reminder of a community that has meant so much to our family.

This project will help create a welcoming place where people of all ages and abilities can play, connect and feel that they belong. We can’t think of a more meaningful way to mark the end of our chapter as business owners.

We had a difficult time holding it together while recording this one. Tomorrow may be even more emotional as we thank the staff, customers, family members and suppliers who helped make Grady’s Feet Essentials a success.

🎉 4 DAYS TO GO!

We’re counting down to September 1, when Kelli and Tony will retire and officially pass the torch to the new owners of Grady’s Feet Essentials, Theresa Thibadeau (Tony’s cousin) and Mark Walsh.

Yesterday, Theresa shared her journey from employee to owner. Today, she introduces her husband and soon-to-be business partner, Mark!

Mark spent more than 20 years working in the automotive industry, where he developed a real appreciation for safety boots that provide comfort and support through a long workday. He’s looking forward to drawing on that experience and expanding the safety boot selection at Grady’s Feet Essentials.

He has also been spending time in our repair shop, learning how to complete Birkenstock repairs and provide our Blundstone TLC service. In today’s video, you’ll see Tony sharing his knowledge and giving Mark some hands-on training.

Mark brings valuable experience, practical knowledge and a willingness to learn. He also brings a good sense of humour, which is especially evident at the end of the video! 😂

Tomorrow, Kelli and Tony reflect on the privilege of giving back to the community that supported their business and share news of one final contribution under their ownership.

📸 ANOTHER BONUS FROM THE GRADY FAMILY ARCHIVES!

Earlier this week, our 7 Days to Go video looked back at an important chapter in the Grady’s Shoes story: our years at Lansdowne Place.

We began by selling footwear from a cart in the mall. From there, Grady’s grew into a full storefront that changed considerably over the years.

Some of these photographs appeared briefly in our countdown video, while others didn’t make it into the Reel. We thought they deserved a closer look!

Today, Theresa shares the journey that has prepared her to take this exciting next step.

She first joined the Grady’s team in her twenties. After gaining experience in other retail stores and industries, she returned to Grady’s Feet Essentials in 2016 with a wealth of knowledge and an even greater appreciation for exceptional customer service.

Over the past several years, Theresa has worked hard behind the scenes to learn every aspect of the business. She has taken on responsibilities including ordering, inventory control, staff scheduling, accounting, social media and the countless daily details involved in running a successful store.

Becoming an owner is the natural next step in a career built on hard work, experience and a genuine love of helping customers. Theresa knows this business, cares deeply about the people it serves and is ready to lead Grady’s Feet Essentials into its next chapter.

We know she’ll preserve the comfortable footwear, expert fitting and personal service our customers know and love while bringing her own ideas and special flair to store ownership.

At the end of today’s video, Theresa gives us a little preview of tomorrow’s countdown: it’s time to introduce her husband and soon-to-be business partner, Mark!

🎉 6 DAYS TO GO!

We’re counting down to September 1, when Kelli and Tony will retire and officially pass the torch to the new owners of Grady’s Feet Essentials: Theresa Thibadeau (Tony’s cousin) and her husband, Mark Walsh.

Today, we’re bringing the Grady’s story home to 231 King Street, our current location and the place Grady’s Feet Essentials will continue to welcome customers.

Owning our own building had always been a dream. When we discovered 231 King Street, we fell in love with its warm, welcoming character and the plentiful parking nearby. The building had been sitting empty for a couple of years and needed plenty of work, but we could see its potential.

We purchased it in 2018 and began restoring it. At first, it housed our offices and extra inventory while our store remained at Lansdowne Place.

Then the pandemic changed our plans. Because the King Street doors opened directly outdoors, there were times when we could welcome customers here while the mall was required to remain closed. The response from our customers and staff was so positive that we decided to turn the building into a full retail store.

Along the way, Grady’s also received a fresh new look, including the colours and logo you know today. A special thank-you goes to Clint and Kerry from Barking Pixel Design for helping us bring that vision to life.

When our Lansdowne Place lease ended in 2022, we completed the move and officially made 231 King Street our home.

🎉 7 DAYS TO GO!

We’re counting down to September 1, when Kelli and Tony will retire and officially pass the torch to the new owners of Grady’s Feet Essentials: Theresa Thibadeau (Tony’s cousin) and her husband, Mark Walsh.

Today, we’re looking back at one of the biggest leaps in the Grady’s Shoes story: opening at Lansdowne Place Mall.

As a small independent retailer, getting into Peterborough’s largest and most popular mall wasn’t easy. The mall preferred established chain stores, and many footwear suppliers wouldn’t sell to us. But Grady’s found a way in, beginning with footwear sold from a cart in the mall.

That cart eventually grew into a successful store and became an important chapter in our family and business history.

Kelli and Tony share photographs, memories and some of the challenges they faced along the way. There’s also a rare moment in which Kelli admits, on camera, that Tony was right about something. We now have video evidence! 😂

Our “8 Days to Go!” Countdown video today took us back to 386 George Street North, the second home of Grady’s Shoes after the move from Hunter Street in 1986.

We’ve gathered some of the photographs featured in the video, along with a few extras, so you can take a closer look at our years on George Street. These images span the 1980s to the early 2000s and capture familiar faces, changing styles and plenty of memories!

We’re counting down to September 1, when Kelli and Tony will retire and officially pass the torch to the new owners of Grady’s Feet Essentials: Theresa Thibadeau (Tony’s cousin) and her husband, Mark Walsh.

Today’s stop on memory lane is 386 George Street North, which became the second home of Grady’s Shoes after the move from Hunter Street.

Standing outside the former storefront, Kelli and Tony revisit photographs and memories spanning the 1980s to the early 2000s. There were plenty of changes along the way, but the focus on comfortable footwear and personal service was already well established.

The space is now home to Couture Candy PTBO, which is moving to an online model at the end of the month. There’s also a sweet connection to our September 1 celebration: Theresa has arranged for some special treats from Couture Candy for everyone who drops by that day!
