“Old things are better than new things because they’ve got stories in them.” - Kami Garcia
This picture is the story of Edie. A 91-year-old whose home I staged as she was moving closer to family.
Never have I met such a spirited woman in her 90’s!
Edie had packed up most her home by the time I arrived. She had a few precious items set aside to be taken with her. The rest she donated, including furniture that she gave to a young mom in need.
Edie set aside some of her antiques for me to look through.
She told me about a precious cast iron clock that her parents brought over from England on a ship. My husband is fixing it 😉.
She showed me tiny vintage shoes, and shared with nostalgia what her life had been like as a child in the 1940’s.
I told her my mom had a similar pair of my grandpa’s that had been cast in bronze. They’re one of my mom’s most precious items.
She showed me a knife sharpener with a bone handle that her father, who had been the town butcher, used to sharpen all his knives. It was precious to her, as it reminded her of her father.
I love these kinds of items because they are much more than antiques, they’re pieces of history with stories and memories that remind us of what life was like before today.
A time when news came in a daily paper, listened to music and sports games on the radio, and lived simply, with carefully crafted furniture and clothing made to last many decades.
In our fast-paced, “Gotta have the newest trend,” kind of market, where mamas exercise with red light masks to hold onto youth, all our food is killing us, and life is becoming more and more expensive as we’re bombarded with bad news, I think holding onto history is a valuable thing.
There is something comforting about growing a small vegetable garden, investing in well-crafted antique furniture, or placing a pair of vintage children’s shoes on a bookshelf to remind you of the days gone by.
It feels like holding onto a smile from the past.
Do you have anything in your life you’ve held onto because of its story? We would love to hear it 🤗❤️🐿️
