Next year marks 30 years since I shot my first wedding.

I was terrible.

Not “cute beginner” terrible.
Just… terrible.

But I never quit.

Not always full-time.
Not always profitable.
Definitely not always smooth.

But I stayed.

And thirty years in the wedding world teaches you something most people don’t expect.

It’s not about expecting the unexpected.
It’s about preparing your reaction to the unexpected.

Because it’s not your day.

Somewhere along the way, you realize that getting the perfect photo or film matters less than guiding two people through one of the most important days of their lives.

You’ll chase the perfect shot.
But you’ll sacrifice it in a heartbeat — for your couple.

That’s the job.

The last eight years in particular changed me.

The couples.
The parents.
The grandparents.
The small Saskatchewan towns.

You invited me into your worlds.

Those 3–4 hour drives across the prairie to places most people will never see — they were therapy for an ADHD brain. Calm. Focus. Wide open sky.

The multi-generational communities gathering together — there’s something sacred about that.

And yes… even as I became older than some of the parents of the couples, the chaos of certain wedding crews (looking at you, Foam Lake) never stopped being hilarious.

But the drive home got harder.
Modern headlights can absolutely f-off.

And more importantly — my babies became kids.
Weekends away started feeling heavy.

Technology was supposed to make everything easier. Instead, it became a web of subscriptions, updates, systems that stopped talking to each other. After COVID, even communication shifted. Things felt more transactional.

Somewhere along the way, the system I built to serve my couples quietly started failing.

Not catastrophically.
Not dramatically.
Just slowly.
And I didn’t notice in real time.

I’ve weathered financial storms. I can adjust to that.

But I can’t keep up with the tech treadmill anymore.
And when I feel like I’m letting people down — even slightly — that’s when I know it’s time.
So here it is:
2027 will be my final booking year.

To every couple, family, and community who trusted me with your memories, thank you. It has been an honour.

Congrats to the Picton’s on the big win - you did the city and province proud.

Before I moved to SK, the word "harvest" was a bit of an abstract concept. You know, maybe something we learned about in school with old-timey images of early settlers and part of the Thanksgiving story.
Now that I've spent countless hours across rural Saskatchewan, the word has an entirely different meaning. It is literally about survival. An unexpected 5-minute storm can wipe out a crop in a blink of an eye.
Harvest is about all-hands-on-deck. It's food being brought into the fields for family dinners, it's working all night, neighbours pitching in, communities coming together to get it "in the bin".
On the radio, there are province-wide reports on the percentage of the season's bounty that's been safely collected.
And when it's done - in legions, halls and churches dotted across the province, communities come together for Fall Suppers. It's a beautiful thing.
For what is often called a "flyover, gas stop" province, there is something special going on in Saskatchewan with families, connection and community.
