*40th Atlantic Balloon Fiesta Expected to Draw Thousands to Sussex*

The Atlantic Balloon Fiesta is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary this week, with organizers expecting the annual event to once again attract tens of thousands of visitors to Sussex.

The 40th Annual Atlantic Balloon Fiesta will take place September 10–13 in Sussex, bringing together more than 30 hot air balloons, amusement rides, vendors, live music and a major classic and antique car show.

Organizers estimate the free-admission festival draws between 80,000 and 100,000 spectators to the Sussex area each year, making it one of the region’s largest annual festivals. The influx of visitors has a significant impact on the local community, with the Fiesta filling campgrounds, hotels and restaurants throughout the Sussex area during the busy festival weekend.

The Atlantic Balloon Fiesta began in 1985 when local pilots recognized an opportunity to help extend the local tourism season by hosting a hot air balloon event. What started as a small and informal gathering has grown into a major festival that attracts balloonists and visitors from near and far.

This year, over 30 balloon pilots are expected to participate. The colourful balloons will take to the skies during scheduled morning and evening launches throughout the weekend, weather permitting.

Over its 40-year history, the Atlantic Balloon Fiesta has become a cherished tradition for generations of families in Sussex and beyond. Many people have grown up attending the festival, making it an annual opportunity to gather with family and friends.

For those who have moved away, Fiesta weekend has often become a special time to return home, reconnect with loved ones and take part in a tradition that has been part of their lives for decades.

The festival’s legacy can also be seen among the pilots themselves. Over the years, some of the volunteers and crew members who helped make the Fiesta possible went on to become hot air balloon pilots, and now take part in the event from the sky.

This year, seven local pilots will take part in the Fiesta, including one the youngest female pilot in Canada, adding another special connection between the festival and the Sussex community.

The first balloon launch is scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m., with additional launches planned Friday through Sunday at 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Paid balloon rides are also available for a fee.

While the balloons remain the main attraction, the Fiesta has grown into a multi-day family festival featuring activities throughout Princess Louise Park and other venues in Sussex. So there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained while you wait for the balloon launches.

Visitors can enjoy amusement rides, an indoor market featuring more than 70 crafters and vendors, live entertainment, a petting zoo, Touch a Truck, magic shows, Ground Zero Laser Tag and Mi'kmaq Heritage Actors. The Ram Rodeo Tour will also be held at the Princess Louise Park Show Centre, while the popular Classic and Antique Car Show will return Sunday.

Weather permitting, the Fiesta will also feature its Magic Night Moon Glow on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. During the Moon Glow, hot air balloons are tethered to the ground and illuminated, creating a colourful nighttime spectacle.

Admission to the festival grounds is free, although some activities have additional fees. Admission to the Indoor Market is $2.

The Atlantic Balloon Fiesta has become an important part of Sussex’s tourism calendar, with thousands of visitors filling the community during the event weekend.

Organizers say the festival’s continued success is the result of the work of hundreds of volunteers, local businesses, corporate sponsors and community supporters.

They are also thanking landowners throughout Sussex and surrounding areas who allow balloonists to land on their properties.

After 40 years, the Atlantic Balloon Fiesta continues to stand as one of Sussex’s signature events. Known as Atlantic Canada’s most colourful festival, the Fiesta fills the skies with colourful balloons and brings a full weekend of entertainment and family activities to the community.

*Paint the Town Purple Fun Run Returns to Sussex Area This Weekend*

The annual Paint the Town Purple Fun Run is set to take place this weekend in the Sussex area, bringing the community together in support of individuals and families impacted by domestic violence.

Organized in support of Sussex Area Domestic Violence Outreach and Sussex Vale Transition House, the family-friendly event welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. The initiative aims to raise awareness, show support for survivors, and celebrate strength, resilience, and hope within the community.

Events will take place across two days, beginning Friday, June 26, with a Paint the Town Purple Walk at O’Connell Park. The walk is open to everyone and operates on a donation basis, offering an inclusive option for those who prefer a more relaxed pace. Participants will follow a community route along Main Street, around Broad Street, and return to the park.

The main running event takes place Saturday morning with a 1K Kids Fun Run at 8 a.m. followed by the Paint the Town Purple Run at 9 a.m. at Sullivan’s Park in Sussex Corner. Participants can choose between a 5-kilometre or 10-kilometre walk or run. New this year is a 1-kilometre youth walk/run for children ages five to 11, with space limited to 50 participants.

Organizers are encouraging participants to wear purple in a show of solidarity, with prizes to be awarded for the most spirited outfits.

In addition to the runs and walk, the event promises a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, designed to bring the community together for a meaningful cause. Proceeds and awareness raised will support outreach services for those experiencing domestic violence in the Sussex area.

Community members are encouraged to take part in any way they can, whether running, walking, volunteering, or cheering from the sidelines. Organizers also note they hope to see strong participation from men in the community, emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in raising awareness and supporting survivors.

The Paint the Town Purple event continues to serve as a visible reminder of the importance of standing together against family, intimate partner, and sexual violence, while working toward a safer and more supportive community for all.

Sussex - We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Matt Moore to the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Kings Regional Service Commission. Matt joins the Commission following a national search that identified several highly competent candidates and we are confident that he possesses the exemplary combination of knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to excel in the CEO role.

Matt brings a collaborative and community-focused leadership approach supported by extensive experience in regional governance, operational management, economic development, tourism, and partnership development across Atlantic Canada. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong ability to work alongside municipalities, government agencies, community organizations, businesses, and volunteers to advance shared regional priorities and strengthen community outcomes.

Originally from the region, Matt began his leadership career locally as the inaugural General Manager of the Nutrien Civic Centre from 2012 to 2015. During that time, he helped establish the facility as a cornerstone community asset while building strong relationships throughout the region.

Most recently, Matt served as Chief Executive Officer of Central Nova Scotia Sports & Entertainment, where he oversaw major public facilities and led initiatives focused on tourism, community development, and regional economic growth. His experience also includes leadership in the attraction and development of national and international sport and cultural events that generate economic impact and community pride within rural regions.

Matt’s contributions to event hosting and destination development were recently recognized nationally through his selection as one of three finalists for the Industry Champion Award by Sport Tourism Canada.

As CEO, Matt will work closely with member municipalities, regional stakeholders, staff, and community partners to advance KRSC’s strategic priorities, strengthen collaboration across the region, and support the effective delivery of shared services that contribute to long-term sustainability and quality of life throughout the Kings Region.

Matt brings high energy to the challenges and opportunities of the Commission as illustrated by his own words:

“I am incredibly honoured and excited to return home with my family and join the Kings Regional Service Commission,” said Moore. “The Kings region played an important role in shaping both my personal and professional journey, and I look forward to reconnecting with the people, communities, and partners that make this area so special.
