WONDERING IF YOU CAN STILL FILE YOUR TAXES AFTER APRIL 30?

Yes—you can still file your taxes after April 30 in Canada, but there are a few important things to know.

1. Filing late is allowed
The Canada Revenue Agency will still accept your tax return after the deadline. You won’t lose your ability to file.

2. Penalties only apply if you owe money

* If you owe taxes, a late-filing penalty applies:
* 5% of the balance owing, plus
* 1% for each full month late (up to 12 months)
* Interest also starts accumulating on what you owe.

3. No penalty if you’re getting a refund
If you’re owed money, there’s no penalty for filing late—you’ll still receive your refund.

4. Benefits and credits may be delayed
Filing late can delay payments like:

* Canada Child Benefit
* GST/HST Credit

5. Self-employed deadline
If you’re self-employed, your filing deadline is usually June 15—but any taxes owed were still due April 30.

So yes, you can file late—but whether it’s harmless or costly depends entirely on your tax position.
