Morning walks are one of my favourite parts of farm life.
This morning, Molly and I enjoyed a quiet stroll through the lavender garden as the sun filtered through the trees and filled the gardens with that beautiful early morning light. Today we’ll be harvesting the English lavender from our parterre garden, so we made sure to savour one last fragrant walk before the baskets come out.
But don’t worry, lavender season isn’t over yet! The X-Intermedia lavender, a hybrid of English and French lavender, is still putting on a beautiful show in the field. There are plenty of blooms to enjoy and the fragrance is still very much in the air.
If you’ve been thinking about visiting, there’s still lots of lavender to see, plenty of pollinators at work, and countless peaceful moments waiting in the gardens.
For now, Molly and I are soaking it all in. 💜🐾

Harvest update! It’s time for us to trim the English lavender. Today, Sunday July 12th will be the last day of our official bloom season. Monday and Tuesday we will do the big trim. But not to worry! The intermedia lavender is still in bloom so there’s still purple to see and blooms to smell! They’ll be in bloom for the next week or so before it’s their turn for a trim.
What’s next? Wildflowers! Butterfly Gardens! Lilies! Sunflowers (although we are fighting with the birds for these this season 🫤) and Harry’s beautifully designed flower garden!
There’s always something in bloom here at Sparta Lavender Farm!

Some of our young plants bloomed early, it’s time to give them a trim. This trim helps encourage a second bloom if you remove the blooms before they’ve gone to seed.

Here we are trimming because the petals are spent, they’ve turned brown. If you trim a little earlier while the buds are still closed, you can dry the flower stems to make lovely bouquets or use the dried buds in sachets.

The English lavender blooms first, we will be harvesting their blooms next week. The Intermedia lavender is just starting to bloom. They will still be blooming for another week or so.

Follow along for more tips on when and how to trim your lavender plants to keep them thriving and looking beautiful!

We get by with a little help from our friends 💜
A big thank you to our neighbours at for giving our farm sign a home on their fence in the village.
Running a small business comes with plenty of challenges, and it’s gestures like this that remind us how lucky we are to be part of such a supportive community.
Sparta is filled with wonderful local businesses that cheer each other on, share opportunities, and help visitors discover all the great things our little corner of Ontario has to offer.
So if you’re passing through the village, be sure to stop in at Sparta Candles…try their fudge and say hello. And while you’re there, you’ll know exactly where to find us too! 🌿😊
Thank you Mark and Sparta Candles for helping us spread the word and for being such a wonderful part of our community.
