5 Things Parents Should Know as a First-Time Skating Family
1️⃣Properly fitted skates make a difference
Skates shouldn't simply be the same size as your child's regular shoes. A proper skate fitting helps ensure the right size, support, and comfort as they learn.
2️⃣You don't need to buy everything at once
For beginners, start with the essentials: skates, a CSA-approved helmet, hard guards, and soakers. As they progress, you can add more skating apparel and accessories. (Check out our First Time Skaters Package!)
3️⃣Skates need care after every session
Wipe the blades dry after skating, use soakers when storing them, and never leave skates sitting in a closed skate bag while they're wet. Proper care helps protect the blades and boots.
4️⃣Falling is part of learning!
Your child will fall — probably a lot! That's completely normal. Learning how to fall safely and get back up is an important part of becoming a confident skater.
5️⃣Every skater progresses at their own pace
Don't compare your child's progress to another skater. Some kids pick up gliding quickly, while others need more time to feel comfortable on the ice. Celebrate the little wins!
