[DIY OYD - EP. 02] the crossover between sewing and woodworking is crazy

I had done woodworking back in high school but that was way before sewing. Now that I have sewing under my belt, my mind maps out new projects in other crafts the same way. How will panels fix together? What’s does that change for my dimensions? Which way is the grainline? What order should I start assembling this? All things that matter in both disciplines.

[DIY OYD - EP. 01] somehow the corners wouldn’t corner…

The most I’ve done in the upholstery field was replacing a seat cover, and that baby project (plus seeing a few Reels) gave me the confidence to reupholster a whole ahh couch.

Its rigid shape makes copying its sides fairly easy. A couple things I didn’t account for well:

1. How tight the cover should be
2. The extra extra seam allowance at the bottom to staple in

A cover made from tracing alone would not give you a taut cover. That’s a huge difference between clothing and furniture. Clothes can drape, furniture needs to be snug.

And the bottom seam allowance issue can easily be fixed by adding an extra panel on the bottom, but better to just add that in from the start.

I would be so down to do more upholstery projects, but these couches do take up a lot of floor space that I don’t have…

[DIY OYD - EP. 00] There are so many things I’ve wanted to try and never got around to. Not because I couldn’t… but because I talked myself out of starting. Well, this series is about what happens when I stop doing that.

These Wallabees are some of my favourite shoes. A simple design, touched by so many creatives over the years. I’ve always wanted to put my own spin on them but kept finding reasons to wait. When this yellow pair finally gave out I ran out of excuses.

With nothing to lose except my pride (lol), I took a seam ripper to the upper. Tested whether I could copy the shape and stitch it back on. To my surprise, it worked. Not perfectly. But enough to make me want to try something bigger.

That’s that “DIY OYD” energy. Trying things outside your domain before you feel ready to. More coming soon.

New Release! Something a little different on the channel today...

One year ago I visited San Francisco for the very first time. I spent the day thrifting and exploring the city, and captured it all on 35mm film. No digital previews, no retakes, just the experience as it happened.

I'm still a film noob but I just love the whole analogue experience.

Side note, I've been working on 2 new sewing patterns with full video tutorials but they're taking MUCH longer than expected. So while we wait for those, I hope you can enjoy this in the meantime 🙂

It’s 2016, I just graduated business school and that last semester was mad fun. I booked a backpacking trip to Asia with a group of friends, had more fun. Came back for convocation and more travel, road trips here and there. Fun fun fun fun…

Then it was all done, and I realized “aw s**t, I still need to lock in a job”. All that fun in school caught up with me and I’m now I’m scrambling. Relative to my peers, I got nothing. They’re working abroad or living downtown working in sky rises, I’m at home in the suburbs working at the mall.

For months, I send out 100s of resumes to jobs I don’t even care about, I just want something at this point. Something to justify my business degree + 4 years of tuition. I get a couple interviews, but I suck at them. Not enough practice, no interest and no confidence. Desperate times call for desperate measures, chop the flow lol.

But then at the end of the year, I get a job offer. Fr, the only part I remember from that interview process was the last question. The interviewer asks “so what’re your other interests?” and I say “I like travelling, cooking, basketball… and sewing”.
