I get hate comments about this, so let’s talk about it.
When I post about Faces of Adoption, people come for me on Facebook. “You are not the face of adoption. Adoptees only are.”
I don’t defend it or argue back, but I will say this clearly:
I never said I am the face of adoption. There is no one face of adoption. That was never the point.
The point was to break a stigma that was so deep, people wouldn’t even wear a T-shirt.
I made shirts years ago, and people said: “I’m not going to wear it because I don’t want people to think my kids are adopted.” I’m sorry — WHAT?
That sentence tells you everything about why this campaign needed to exist.
My friend Jennifer Rosenberg Jennifer Hoffman Rosenberg said it perfectly on this episode:
“There are so many people who are a face of adoption, not because they were adopted, but because their friend, sibling, cousin, aunt did. If you’re connected to someone who is adopted, you’re a face of adoption too.”
That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
Everybody knows someone. Nobody should be ashamed of that connection, and the more people who say it out loud, the easier it gets for the next family who needs to hear that they are not alone.
