Social Emotional learning is SO important for our little ones, and one of the strands kids learn about in their first year of Kindergarten.
Books are a great resource when learning about emotions. How they look, feel, and are handled can be a great example to reference when your little babe might be going through one themselves.

Planting 🪴

Why did we decide to include a planting based activity this season?

Check this out:
✨it builds confidence!
The process of planting, tending & caring for, then watching it bloom provides a sense of personal autonomy & satisfaction! What was once an “adult” activity is now something they are capable of doing!

✨you are planting seeds for STEM thinking
If you have school age children, or have looked into preschools/daycares many people promote “STEM” learning (Science, technology, engineering and math based thinking approach) Growing a plant helps build those natural skills & curiosities while paving the way for this type of thinking and processing!

✨gardens and the act of gardening has known positive effects on mood & well being!
It’s a great activity that promotes focus, stillness and relaxation. It helps to quiet a young mind and bring awareness to the present moments. You are setting a foundation through mindfulness through a simple activity!

Give any children the experience of dabbling a tiny seed into a hole, watering it, protecting it and watching it explode into life and growth—and they might just feel like they have magic powers!

Our collections are paired with a book and an item to enhance early literacy reading comprehension, but that doesn’t mean they ONLY work for that one book.

We love to set up a play & see where it takes our little babes. Here they had the idea to build a town and collected some of the pieces to make it happen. Our last set of blocks became houses, apartments and trees, the stacking house became a garage, a bridge and a house! our peg people were the citizens of the town!

Note that little hand… he was Mr Destruction & really challenged us to rebuild when things didn’t go our way (thanks Rabbit Listened for the perfect little connection)

Mental health matters ✨

It’s no secret that we’re two teachers with a big passion for social emotional learning in our classrooms. This also translates to how we choose to parent our own little babes.

Why is talking about mental health important?

• it normalizes big and small feelings
• it helps little babes think clearly and develop socially
• it encourages self confidence and self regulation

Emotions like anger and anxiety are hard for kids to talk about, but when they can see those emotions reflected in stories they read, they are more likely able to identify and verbalized what they too are feeling!

The big bright feelings book series is a favourite of ours because they are the perfect springboard for families to approach these conversations at home.

We have only a single set left in stock! Send us a DM to reserve yours

Will you be celebrating EID this Sunday?

We love the books by Hena Khan, for not only their representation of Muslim culture, but also the organic way she weaves through educational pieces like learning & identifying shapes!

Are you nervous to incorporate titles with languages or cultures outside of your own knowledge? Most often these books also include a glossary or pronunciation guide so you can learn TOGETHER with your little babes. Swipe to check it out!

I heard someone say today that famous Canadians need to wear a name tag, because we don’t know them well enough.
As sad as that is, it didn’t surprise me. The idea behind our Inspirational Woman’s Shirt, was to bring more attention to the incredible CANADIAN women. We had a list of many influential women, and it was hard to cut down, but talking to others we also realized so many of us didn’t know who they were.

It’s up to us to learn and educate others on CANADIAN women that have made an influence. Who is someone you know that you look up to?

Did you know it is half way through Ramadan?

When Jenn and I started working together, we worked at a school that has a strong community of students who celebrated Ramadan. Our school offered prayer spaces for the students who needed it, as well as a community space for students fasting during Nutrition Breaks. As educators we don't expect our students to teach us about their traditions and festivals, but instead we do research, actively listen to shared stories from students, and work with our school Equity teams to create environments so students can feel seen and heard.

An easy way to create these connections is through BOOKS!

So swipe for a few great books to add to your collections (picture books to middle grade!) Have another recommendation? Let us know below!

NEW BOOK ALERT 🚨

Kindness Grows by Britta Teckentrup

It all starts with a crack that we can hardly see, It happens when we shout or if we disagree. But with every kindness that we care to show, Something good and magical then begins to grow.

Why we chose this:

✨ it uses the metaphor of growing a plant to help little babes understand nurturing kindness
✨ it compares and contrasts strong emotions and actions that can be hurtful with strong emotions and actions that can be helpful
✨ the language and examples used are highly relatable for little babes
✨ visual cutouts make the tree & crack tactile and visual representations of the stories words
✨ illustrations are inclusive and representative of a variety of kids without being stereotypical
