Christian Dior and Roger Vivier began their collaboration in the early 1950s, working together from around 1953 until 1963. Dior believed that a couture look was incomplete without the right shoes, and he hired Vivier to design footwear exclusively for the house. Their partnership became one of the most iconic designer-accessory collaborations in fashion history. Vivier created shoes that echoed Dior’s sculptural silhouettes—sleek satin stilettos, curved heels, and opulently embellished pumps—often described as jewel-like in craftsmanship. He is widely credited with popularizing the modern stiletto heel during this period. The relationship between the two was rooted in artistic respect; Dior trusted Vivier’s vision and gave him creative freedom to interpret the essence of each collection through footwear. Even after Dior’s death in 1957, Vivier continued designing for the house under Marc Bohan’s direction until 1963, solidifying his legacy as the “Fragonard of the shoe.”
