I love this quote so much and it definitely resonates with me! In our household we try very hard not to do chores during nap time or if we do, it’s only for half the time. The rest is to enjoy and relax 😊

What do you do during nap time? Chores, Netflix, chill or maybe stare at the baby monitor until they wake up?! 😂 (that used to be me)

In conjunction with wake windows, keep an eye out for these signs that your baby is ready to sleep. An overtired baby is often difficult to put to sleep and they have a hard time staying asleep. Try to catch them in that sweet spot and put them down BEFORE they get overtired aka, the "Get me to sleep!" stage.

Kiddos sleep lightest from 4-6am so early morning wake ups are common and sometimes the temperature is the culprit. Around 4am is when the body temperature starts dropping in preparation to start producing cortisol to wake in the morning. It's also often the coldest temperature outside as well. So turning up the heat by a degree or two could keep baby from getting too cold and having a long wake up. In addition to temperature, ensure there is no light coming in nor loud sounds around that time.

It can be tough sometimes to figure out if your kiddo is ready to drop a nap. Use this chart as a guide and keep an eye out for these signs👇🏽 that your little one is ready.

💤 The last nap of the day is getting shorter and more difficult
💤 Sudden early morning wakings
💤 Baby is playing in the crib for long periods of time instead of napping

👉🏽 Certain milestones can cause disruptions in naps so ensure these signs are occurring consistently for 1 - 2 weeks before dropping a nap.

Happy Snoozing! 😊

A "wake window" is a fancy term for how long your kiddo should be awake in-between naps and before bed. These are averages so, some babies might fall perfectly within these time frames and others may not. It's always good practice to balance out wake windows with sleepy cues. Be sure to save this so you can refer back to it when needed!

"Choices, wait, what? - I thought we needed a predictable bedtime routine?!" - YES, but within that predictable bedtime routine, ensure that your little one gets to make some choices about how their bedtime goes. Toddlers LOVE to have their voices heard and know that their opinions matter. Give them some choices around:

👉🏽which books to read
👉🏽which PJs to wear
👉🏽which parent puts them to bed if there are 2 at home
👉🏽which animal / stuffy to take to bed
👉🏽which song to sing

This will help them feel independent while still having the security of good boundaries and consistency. 😊

Some new parents can get worried that they are creating bad habits if they hold their newborn too much, which breaks my heart! But, babies don't even start producing Melatonin until 2 - 3 months of age and they don't have a fully developed circadian rhythm. So, no need to worry about it, ENJOY and soak in the snuggles!

What does your baby's night look like and what's happening?

Most babies naturally go to bed between 6:30pm - 8pm, depending on their age and wake windows. Sometimes, about 45 minutes later, baby might wake up. This is usually caused by baby being under tired or overtired at bedtime or being too drowsy at bedtime. So, if this is a struggle, play with the wake windows or if baby is getting too drowsy during their feed, try moving it towards the start of their bedtime routine.

Once they are asleep, they go into a deep sleep, often lasting around 3 hours. It's unlikely baby will wake up during this time. Once that stage is over, they are back into lighter sleep and may have several wakings usually around 2 hours apart. If they are independent sleepers, they will fall back asleep usually within about 10 minutes.

4-6am is the lightest stage of nighttime sleep and baby can wake very easily during this time as their melatonin drops. Any light or sound has a good chance of waking baby up. Blackout blinds and noise machines are very helpful to keep light and sound from waking up baby. It's also a naturally cool time of night so ensuring the temperature is just right for baby will help.

If your child is already tired, then why is it so hard to put them to sleep?

Kids, as with all people, have a natural rhythm when it comes to sleep. Our bodies secrete hormones to keep us up and running during the day, and different ones to help us rest at night. They’re dependent on a variety of factors, but timing is the most prevalent.

So what happens when your little one stays awake past the time when these natural cues to sleep are activated? Well, the body assumes there’s a reason that it hasn’t been allowed to get to sleep, assumes there’s a need to stay awake, and fires up those daytime hormones again. And that’s when the trouble starts. Because once those signals to stay awake get fired up, they’re tough to shut down, and baby’s already tired. So less sleep leads to more daytime hormones, and the cycle perpetuates itself.

The best way to prevent this situation is to get baby to sleep before they get past that window of opportunity. Do this by keeping an eye on early sleepy cues, use age appropriate wake windows and an early bedtime.

Typically, babies will drop from 2 naps to 1 between 13 to 18 months, with the most common age being 14 to 15 months. So, how to know when your baby is ready for the switch, keep an eye out for these signs:

- Baby may begin to sleep longer for their morning nap, while the afternoon nap gets progressively shorter.
- They will simply play in the crib for the entire afternoon nap and not sleep.
- If they do sleep in the afternoon, it will be later in the day and you are waking them to preserve their bedtime.
- Occasionally, it's the morning nap that's the challenging one and the afternoon nap ends up being longer.
- One of the naps may become suddenly challenging. Instead of playing in the crib, they may cry and carry on for much longer then normal and refuse to sleep for the entire nap.

If you find that your baby is doing these things 4-5 days out of the week, then it might be time to make the switch!
