COVER ARTIST: Hilary Lipkin pays tribute to the iconic Bertha Chair, designed by Donna Wilson for the Fogo Island Inn. 👉 Named for Bertha Wilson, who journeyed from humble beginnings to become the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, the chair was inspired by vintage barrel chairs made from rain barrels. “That’s what drew me to recreate Bertha,” explains Hilary. “My art is all about turning discarded materials into things of beauty.”
In her mini version, Hilary upcycled wood from a w**e box. Imogen Heath Sarah Louise fabric was chosen for the upholstery, its sea blue colour and gestural pattern of wildflowers and leaves evocative of Fogo’s rugged, windswept setting.
Speaking of that setting, Hilary is off to Fogo Island by invitation to create a new series of minis. Come back with lots of ideas, Hilary!
